He’s the lovable dad of Australia’s adored blue heeler pup Bluey, but there are claims that Bandit is actually a bully with a much darker side.

An article, which has levelled claims of bullying at Bandit, has been lambasted by Bluey fans for painting a less than favourable picture of the nation’s favourite cartoon dad. In a piece penned for The Conversation David Burton and Kate Cantrell, both lecturers at the University of Southern Queensland, ask if Bandit is a lovable larrikan ‘or just a bad dad?’

The article leads off with the line ‘Bandit Heeler is a hero’, and details everything there is to love about the character. From balancing ‘the drudgery of housework with the creative escapades of his daughters’ to ‘repurposing everyday objects and actions for imaginative play and engagement’.

But the writers claim Bandit has a ‘darker side’. And it’s intertwined with the simplistic stereotype of the Australian larrikin: “The likeable roguish male stuck between childhood and adulthood whose disrespect of authority and rough-and-ready masculinity reflects Australia’s emotional attachment to the working-class underdog,” they explain.

The article delves into the undertones of larrikinism, with its history ‘firmly rooted in Australia’s colonial literature’.

Is Bandit A Bad Dad Bluey

The writers describe Bandit as ‘the underdog who knocks authority, mocks pomposity, and regularly breaks the rules to get what he wants – even resorting to cheating when he can’t outsmart or outpace his children’.

The article even gives examples of Bandit’s larrikin behaviour – holding Bluey back from the finish line so he can win an obstacle course.

“Even Bandit’s name conjures up the small-time crimes of bushrangers, Australia’s revered outlaws who also achieved a type of perverse folk hero status,” the article explains.

There are even examples of Bandit’s bullying:

“Occasionally, however, we catch a glimpse of Bandit’s darker side, with his playful teasing of his young daughters sometimes devolving into bullying.

“In one episode, Bandit agrees to open Bingo’s ice block before repeatedly licking her frozen sweet in front of her. Afterwards, Bandit apologises to his daughter for being ‘a bit mean’.”

‘Rubbish!’

The article has attracted the ire of parents who have defended Bandit’s character.

“I’m sorry, this author has totally missed the brief. The most charming part of the show is the interactions between parent and child. Could not disagree more,” wrote one fan.

“Rubbish,” added another Bluey fan. “The writer clearly hasn’t watched enough episodes of Bluey. There’s considerable nuance to his character, and in general he’s pretty self-deprecating about his ‘larrikin’ character. I’ve had a lot of episodes to analyse this (many repeated). Overall, an insufficient analysis of the text and character in question. B- for this assignment, oops, ‘article’.”

What are your thoughts on the character of Bandit? Let us know in the comments below.

  • I don’t watch Bluey. I don’t have kids in the age range. But, from what I do know Bluey is a revelation in the kids space. Why do we have to dissect and analyse everything? Can’t we just enjoy something for what it is? All my childhood fairytales etc. are now being ruined for me by the PC brigade. Can’t we just leave Bluey alone?

  • Sigh. Everyone is entitled to their opinion …..but I disagree with the interpretation. I think Bandit is presented as a realistic not perfect dad, and I also think that ‘bully’ is overstating it. Perhaps the writer has over analysed the material rather than assessed it as a whole entirety.
I love bluey! I love Bandit and how Chilli pulls him up on stuff.

  • I think bluey is very relatable to parents and that is Jason st nit picking. We all have our strengths and faults and raising beautiful little humans is damn hard work.

  • I’ve been present while my daughter watches almost every bluey episode. He is definitely a bully and does loads of things that promote a bad role model. Just like 99% of dads on TV shows., by design. But more than anything he likes to have fun with the kids.. so that is the message i tell my daughter. When i see the dad do something mean i literally say to my daughter thats not very nice (but usually adding – that he is just trying to play) i also tell her that we do not copy the show.

    • Glad I’m not the only parent who doesn’t like the show or think the dad is brilliant! I’d like to see a show where the dad isn’t made to be an idiot by design

  • Can kids just be kids and enjoy tv shows, nursery rhymes etc without everything being ruined

  • Someone always has to critic something. I remember the cartoons I used to watch when I was young and there is no way you would see those types of cartoons playing for kids now. bluey is harmless.

  • They remade the teenage mutant ninja turtles, limited the looney tunes amongst others. No matter what is made there will always be someone who has an issue or takes offence to something. Don’t like it? Don’t watch it. Simple!!

  • It’s just a normal kids cartoon! Why do you people want to mess everything

  • What?!?! I think some people have a lot of time on their hands, just leave kids cartoons all alone.

  • I’ve watched this with my grandson and I find what these people are saying is absolutely ridiculous! It’s a clean, all round good sense of humour show designed for little ones. I just can’t believe that someone can find fault in this show. It’s like them banning Noddy and Big Ears because they said they had a bad relationship. Geez! What more are people going to whinge about? This is just so ridiculous. ????????‍♀️????????‍♀️????????????????‍♀️????????‍♀️

  • I remember an episode when he was in an obstacle race with Bluey in their backyard and he cheated to win after Bluey was just about to beat him.
Suppose no one is perfect lol.

  • My boys are not really interested in Bluey yet. We watched a few older episodes which where okay.

  • You can’t have everything text book perfect, our children also need to learn different life lessons and unfortunately not everyone in the world is nice, we can’t hide them from everything even though we wish we could.

  • I don’t watch the show, so… but with this sort of thing, sometimes it comes down to how he makes his kids feel.
