One of the best thing about the countdown to Christmas is snuggling up and watching Christmas movies.

Whether you’re into the classics, or prefer the more modern take on a festive flick (we’re looking at your Die Hard), there’s just something about a Christmas movie session.

And now, Australia’s 30 favourite Christmas movies have been revealed in a new study – but we’re still scratching our heads at this list. In particular, the film that took top billing.

The culture experts at Preply crunched the numbers by using an IMDb seed list of the 100 most popular Christmas films and analysing their Australia-based search volume. They came up with the 30 movies that Aussies just can’t get enough of, and they even broke it down into states and territories.

Australia’s most popular Christmas movies

According to the data, Australia’s most popular Christmas movie is … drum roll please … Shazam. Wait, what? We’re not even sure the 2019 DC superhero flick is even a Christmas movie!

Also among the favourites are more traditional movies like Elf, I’ll Be Home For Christmas, Home Alone, It’s a Wonderful Life, Love Actually and The Santa Claus.

There are also a few that have become Christmas faves, but are far less traditional, like Gremlins and Die Hard.

Australia’s favourite Christmas movies by region

If you’re wondering what other people living in your state or territory are watching with their Christmas snacks, the data is a little different.

Queenslanders and Tasmanians are partial to some Christmas jump-scare action with Better Watch Out and Krampus among the favourites, while in NSW it’s more of a wholesome option with Nativity.

South Australians tend to go for the obvious, but fabulous choice of Elf. Interestingly, Shazam is nowhere to be seen!

  • Not really a Christmas movie type of person. But now that I’m a mom, I should better use this list as reference. It’s time to start some Christmas traditions with my own family.

  • Could be a nice holiday activity to watch a movie with the whole family. However with the diffrent age range in our family, it’s quite hard to please all
