Hello!

Aussie shoppers have spoken, revealing their favourite supermarket in Canstar’s annual Supermarket Satisfaction awards.

And for the sixth consecutive year, ALDI has come out on top.

The German-owned retail fave outshone Coles, Woolworths and IGA, snagging five stars in almost every category of the awards. From overall satisfaction, to value for money, layout and store presentation, produce freshness and specials, ALDI scored an impressive five stars.

However when it comes to product variety and customer service, ALDI was awarded three and four stars respectively.

According to Aldi Australia Group Director, Simon Padovani-Ginies, shoppers are more savvy than ever when it comes to value for money.

“Aldi has won a spot in the hearts and back pockets of Aussie shoppers through one simple and consistent commitment: high quality products at competitively low prices,” Mr Padovani-Ginies said.

As part of the awards, 2,770 Australians were surveyed on the supermarket they’d purchased from in the last month. Woolworths came in at second place, followed by Coles, IGA and other supermarket brands including Costco, Foodland and Foodworks.

  • I’ve been a Coles shopper mainly for about a year now due to proximity. I sometimes go to Woolworths because I prefer their in house bakery for bread and for some of their specials. I’d like to go to Aldi more often but because they don’t have everything I just don’t have the time anymore to go to more than two supermarket stores.

  • I love shopping at Aldi where you get some very unique items that you can’t get anywhere else. I refuse to shop at Woolworths and I only buy some bread and mentos from Coles . I refuse to buy from them because they’re price gouging everyone and trying to convince us they’re doing us a favour but in actuality they’re not. Look at Woolworths and Coles profits for the last year. It’s disgusting and people should start buying from independently owned IGA’s to keep the local economies going. Coles and Woolworths pay next to nothing for their meat, milk, fruit and vegetables etc but the poor old farmer is losing out while they jack up their prices! Completely disgusting and I’ve found rotten fruit at Coles and was in trouble off the fruit and vege manager for pulling them out and leaving them on the side so no one would buy them. Then I turned around and she’d put the rotten fruit back into the pile. So it just shows you how they’re really taking advantage! Plus, they’re doing away with all the people checkouts and only having self serve. If that’s the case we should be getting our groceries cheaper! I’ll never use a self serve checkout because it’s doing someone out of a job. What’s happening? Is there no personal service anymore except for Aldi and IGA and other smaller businesses? Really gets my goat.

  • Im coles shopper but I do also visit woolies and Aldi.

  • Aldi is great for some things especially price but I personally don’t think it stacks up for variety, quality or customer service but I guess each store is different.

  • Aldi has some pretty great middle aisle specials but that is what I mainly go there for. I prefer my local small supermarket for fruit and veggies, and Coles and Woolies for everything else.

  • I love Aldi, but disability means I need online shopping… which means I can’t shop there for the bulk of my groceries.

  • Do not shop at Aldi as I find their stores very claustrophobic, and I dislike that the profits made here in Australia end up overseas with no chances for our super funds to be able to purchase shares in these supermarkets. I tend to stick with Coles or Woolworths which are on our stock exchange and hep our super funds and are more of a one stop shop than Aldi. If you want to save money, then buy in bulk in our supermarkets which is very hard to do in Aldi stores.

    • All Aldi stores buy from Australian producers. Meat, milks etc, fruit and veggies etc are all Australian. If you think Coles and Woolworths are looking after you, think again! Look at their preposterous profits from this last year! They’re price gouging all of us and making out they’re keeping prices down for staples when they haven’t! You might think that the profits from them are staying here but think again. Your reasoning is wrong.

  • I’ve never really gotten to Aldi! I clearly need to try it more!

  • I only shop at Aldi on rare occasions as I tend to get my groceries delivered and they don’t offer this option.

  • I mainly shop at Woolworths and occasionally at IGA. I shopped in Aldi once and would never go there again. I find it very difficult to walk and the only occasion I went to Aldi, I only grabbed a couple of things I wanted and when it came to the checkout, my things were pushed to the end and then the next persons shopping was pushed in with mine. It may be cheaper but I felt more like a nuisance than a wanted customer. I’d rather pay a bit more and get treated with respect.

  • I find Aldi to be so much cheaper. We used to shop at Coles every week, occasionally Woolies but started going to Aldi to try to save more on groceries, which is one of our greatest expenses. The difference for us has been significant. We save between $30 and $50 per week which adds up over a year!

  • I’m still not a regular ALDI shopper. I must admit when I go in there for one thing and no bag, I always end up buying more. It’s less about the food and more about the middle aisles for me. I’m still a regular Coles shopper. My smaller store has everything I need, including Best Buys. I don’t need the distraction or expense of a wider variety – Woolies always scares me with so much more to choose from. So I love my Coles. They’re No. 1 for me.

  • Aldi is great but you always leave buying things you really don’t need. I get it very smart marketing model and it’s great quality just don’t think I could do my whole shop at Aldi and who has the time to go to multiple places unless they are right next door to eachother.

  • I shop at Coles mostly. Coles, Woolworths, and Aldi are all in very close proximity. I prefer the range of Coles and mostly shop products on special, I LOVE the flybuys program it’s saved me so much money and I’ve gotten tons of great products for free like glassware, cookware, bakeware and storage containers. Aldi is good for specific products in the special buys. I purchased a set of electric drums for only $300 which is a pretty great deal.

  • Aaand it’s still not in Tassie…

  • And Aldi isn’t even Aussie owned. Probably time for us all to support local and smaller chains like IGA.

  • I prefer fresh food markets over supermarkets for variety and freshness.

    • There is a massive of variety of products to purchase from other stores at fresh food markets and the savings are considerable for our household.
