Babies create all kinds (and colours) of mess, and a gentle baby laundry detergent is a must-have when it comes to cleaning up clothes and bedding.

Baby laundry detergent is developed especially for ultra-sensitive skin without the chemicals that cause eczema flair-ups and skin irritation. Synthetic fragrances, dyes and phosphates are just some of the ingredients left out of popular detergents suitable for babies, with some brands adding natural ingredients for an extra hit of goodness.

But not all baby-safe laundry products are actually called ‘baby detergent’ and it can be tough to know where to start when it comes to choosing one. So to help you find a reliable detergent for your baby’s grubby onesies, we consulted our huge community of mums and put their favourite brands in one spot for you.

Why do babies need a special detergent?

Babies have thinner, more fragile skin than adults, making them more likely to develop eczema, asthma or allergies from the harsh chemicals used in detergents. In fact, the Eczema Association of Australasia lists soaps and laundry detergents as one of the most common triggers for infant flair-ups. So if your little one has particularly sensitive skin, consider a gentle, baby-safe product.

What detergent is best for babies’ clothes?

The best detergent for baby clothes is one that thoroughly washes clothes without aggravating young skin. Here are some things to look for in a gentle laundry detergent for babies:

  • A ‘sensitive’ or ‘mild’ formula
  • Natural rather than synthetic fragrances
  • Hypoallergenic (meaning unlikely to cause reactions)
  • No dyes or optical brighteners

What’s the difference between baby laundry detergent and regular types?

The main difference between baby-safe products and regular laundry detergent is that they contain less harsh chemicals that can irritate sensitive young skin.

Should you use fabric softeners on baby clothes?

According to raising children, it’s best to avoid regular fabric softeners for newborn clothes as they often contain chemicals that irritate the skin. Instead, stick to ‘sensitive’ detergents that are more gentle and leave less residue on clothes and bedding.

* Of course, always talk to your doctor if you have any concerns about your child’s skin.

  • We are off this weekend to shop and to buy more Biozet for the laundry. We do like to buy it bulk when it is on special. It really is such a good laundry product to use when cleaning clothes and only a little Biozet is needed for a good clean wash.

  • Back when I had my daughter I don’t even know if there were baby laundry products. Fortunately the products I used didn’t harm our skin.

  • This article was fabulous and very informative. I have been using baby detergent since my daughter was born and I still use it as it is less harsh on the families skin and as we all suffer from skin allergies this really does help it not get irritated. There is so many varieties available these days it is great to see.

  • Thanks so much for this in depth article. I usually use the Biozet attack sensitive which I’ve been really happy with and I always grab it when it goes on sale but there definitely seems to be some other really good options which i might try. Especially if I can’t get the biozet for some reason.

  • I’m a sucker for anything May Gibbs so I would LOVE to try the Bondi Wash product. I love anything that is Australian made and the essential oils sound really lovely. For the price though it would have to be a special occasion detergent, I couldn’t see that being a part of the regular shop

  • Baby laundry detergents are also really good for kids with sensitive skin, like my twelve year old who suffers from eczema. We found that switching to a low irritant detergent reduced the number of breakouts she has. The two which have worked for us are Purity (listed above) and Dirt (online only).

  • Thank you for sharing your article. There are so many options out there, that it becomes hard to try them all out. When our kids were little I used soap nuts and it actually surprises me that soap nuts are not mentioned in this list. Soap nuts are actually a berry and they are the most natural you can get and can be used for many things like skin, hair surface cleaner as a washing detergent.

  • Biozet continues to be a product that we love to buy when it is on special in store and use when doing the laundry for the family. Biozet have a great range of products to suit the cleaning and washing of clothes for every member of this busy and active family.

  • We found Purity fantastic for our daughter who had eczema. Really helped reduce the frequency of her breakouts, and it worked well as a laundry detergent. We also found that Dirt – which you can only get online – is equally fantastic. A little more expensive but both are really good for sensitive skin.

  • Ive used the biozet one and can confirm it works great. Even in a cold wash. Its never left any residual marks or stains and even better has little to no fragrance. Definitely a suitable option for families looking for a more sensitive option, especially for children who have sensitive skin

  • There are so many options these days. I just used something that was good for sensitive people. Low scent. But just for the first year and after that I wasnt worried so much and my kids were all good andf thankfully never reacted to anything I used in the laundry.

  • We use cold power sensitive for all our clothes

  • I buy a variety of laundry powders and often can’t tell which is better.

  • I add pinetarsol bath oil to the rinse cycle for super clean smelling nappies inserts. I love doing laundry when I do this, smells amazing.

  • Coles brand laundry detergent. 2 litres for $1.50. Cleans great, smells great and the cheapest there is

  • I’ve tried a couple of these. I regularly buy Bosistos and Omo.

  • I use Ecostore but the liquid version for bugs I still use it now for my growing boys. My youngest has ezcema and found it to be the best for his skin.

  • So many different laundry powders available to chose from. Quite daunting.

    Reply

  • I recently tried the Trinature washing powder. It’s really good and smells so lovely.

  • I can’t remember what I used, it’s quite a while ago. I have used soap nuts in the past, it’s as natural as you can get and I like the whole Bosisto’s line
