From fruity to chocolatey and everything in between, Australia’s best supermarket hot cross buns have been revealed, just in time to stock up for Easter.

Each year the lucky crew at CHOICE taste test hot cross buns served up by supermarkets across Australia, and this year 19 different buns were put through their paces. Traditional fruit, chocolate, gluten-free and regular were tested from national supermarkets including Coles and Woolworths as well as IGA, Aldi, Bakers Delight and Costco. Last year Woolies took the top honour, but this year they’ve been toppled.

Coming out top of the pops in 2025 … drum roll please … Coles Luxurious Fruit Hot Cross Buns. It’s the second consecutive year Woolies has taken out the top billing.

“Coles Luxurious Fruit Hot Cross Buns took first place in our traditional bun taste test, receiving a score of 75%,” CHOICE Editorial Director, Mark Serrels said. “Our experts praised it for its great array of fruits, which produced interesting flavours and textures. Our judges also said this one is perfect for toasting and buttering.”

The CHOICE experts blind taste tested each hot cross bun, giving them a rating based on flavour, appearance, aroma and texture.

  • “Nice looking for gluten-free, shape is great. Flaxseed aroma and flavour is very strong. Where is the chocolate flavour?”

What’s your favourite supermarket hot cross bun? Let us know in the comments below!

  • I am not a fan of any fruit hot cross buns – I just don’t like them, and nor do all my kids. But the fruitless ones I enjoy, and the kids like to alternate between chocolate chip and plain chocolate hot cross buns as dessert treats. Oh, and hte occasional caramilk.

  • It’s great to get these tests done to let us know the best one’s to buy but I only go to Woolworths or Bakers Delight because they are the closest shops available. I only buy the fruitless one’s for myself and I’m super happy with the Woolworths ones. I get the fruit or chocolate ones for my son.

  • I love reading articles like this, it makes my mouth water and now i want a not cross bun for morning tea. I loved the chocolate hot cross buns from coles this year – well actually I love anything chocolate. Add a little butter and warm them up in the microwave, they are the best. The chocolate becomes soft and so yummy to eat.

  • It is always good to get these articles because there are so many different ones to choose from! We usually go for the chocolate and Coles is the main place we shop at, but I will say chocolate seems a little boring now with things like ‘biscoff’ flavour on the market this year!

  • Omg yum! Honestly one on the things I love most about easter is Hot Cross Buns! There are so many different types and flavours out there but I’m a bit of a traditionalist at heart and a cokes shopper so pleased to see coles finest traditional come out on top! Although I’m also a fan of the apple and cinnamon 🙂 yum

  • Thank you for sharing these findings. In the end taste is very personal and you might not like the hot cross buns that are considered to be the best. In our house hold actually nobody is interested in hot cross buns any more. I used to buy them weekly, but the noses were pulled up and they went off. So I’ve discontinued buying or making them.

  • We do love to make and also buy hot cross buns from the shops and the bakery. Coles do indeed have delicious hot cross buns. We like the variety of hot cross buns that can be purchased from Coles. They are so good to eat for morning or afternoon tea.

  • Woolies currently have a couple of new flavours for the sweet tooth! Caramilk choc chips is delicious without being overly sweet. Biscoff is AMAZING!! Has a good dollop of biscoff in the centre of each bun. Coles also have the Vovo inspired buns which are equally delicious. All three of these aren’t your traditional flavours but they all taste amazing!

  • Really surprised to see a supermarket like coles come out on top! I like that their own brand products they release are getting better and better – but are more affordable vs going to a bakery. It gives families more value for money without skimping on taste and quality which is great
