It’s the school snack that costs less than $3, has only two ingredients and is tasty enough for kids to scoff without a complaint.

While this viral school snack hack has recently taken TikTok by storm, it’s anything but new. These two ingredient muffins have been around since the ’80s, and a whole new generation is getting to enjoy the cheap and cheerful creations.

Two ingredient school snack hack

TikToker Claudia Shops took to the social media platform and shared the simple snack idea with her followers. Her first in a series of videos detailed the recipe for two ingredient muffins containing nothing more than a Coles Vanilla Cake Mix and a tin of peaches, juice and all.

“You don’t need any milk, butter eggs or anything like that. This only cost me $2.80. It will look really dry, just keep going and it will get more soggy.”

Claudia then baked the muffins at 160°C for 22 minutes, and did a taste test.

“Yum! Delicious. It’s actually really good.” She said her kids ‘loved’ them.

Her video was flooded with comments from people who had been doing the same hack for years, often with a different mix of two ingredients.

“Been doing this since the ’90s,” replied one follower. “Try chocolate cake and a tin of cherries. And try cake mix with a can of coke, lemonade or Fanta.”

So Claudia set about testing a few different combinations. She tried Coles Vanilla Cake Mix and a tin of pears. She also added cinnamon sugar on top. She says they were also delicious, but not as good as the peaches combo.

Claudia also tried chocolate cake and tinned cherries. Here’s how she did it and what she thought:

She even tried the cup of lemonade and vanilla cake mix muffins, which she said cost a tiny $2 for ingredients. She also added some chopped up strawberries, because the mixture looked too plain!

“Spoiler alert, they’re delicious! I would say the lemonade is better than the tin of fruit and just add whatever fruit you have in the fridge, or none at all. Super cheap and super yum.”

  • I love this, it looks cheap and easy to make. Something you could get the kids involved in over the school holiday’s and then freeze them ready for when the school year starts. They are a great cheap idea. I reckon my favourite would be a berry mix one with lots of blueberries, raspberries and strawberries.

  • Great idea seeing everything is so expensive. Its great that there is not many ingredients and even better no eggs seeing they are hard to get. My kids have always loved cakes so will give these a go

  • Anything like this is awesome when you have a sweet tooth in the house. My man loves baked treats but lets face it there are moments when I just dont feel like spending all that time in the kitchen or I just dont have the time so recipies like this are perfect

  • Great for dessert, maybe not the most lunch box friendly these days. They’re so strict in schools now, I loved a slice of cake in my lunch. But I love her creativity in these recipes.

  • They look great for after school treats but I think you’ll find they won’t be acceptable for school. I know the schools around near where I live don’t allow anything like that. No pies, no chips, no ice creams or paddle pops, nothing. They’re just trying to teach children to eat well and healthy and hopefully not end up obese because of too many sweet snacks.

  • I’ve seen this a few times on socials! I’d be keen to try but I’m not sure how healthy they are :/

  • Such a simple idea, but how long would they keep and should they be kept in the fridge. As a single person, they won’t go as quickly in my house as in yours with chikdren.

  • I tried chocolate cake mix with Pepsi max and white choc chips. Wasn’t a big fan but my son loved them. Then I made it with a tin of apple slices and they were delicious.

  • Similar to using cake mix with frozen mixed berries and can of lemonade it’s like a cobbler.

  • I use bananas that are over ripe, I use 3 mashed and a cake mix mixed together. Cooked like normal and the family love it. We do the other ones too of soft drink and tinned fruits.
