They’ve become the hot hair accessory after a resurgence in popularity, but we’re being warned to remove claw clips before driving, after reports of horror injuries.

While the clips seems harmless enough, they’ve reportedly caused injuries to women who have been involved in car accidents.

Paisley shared her story in a bid to warn other claw clip wearers of their danger. She posted a series of TikTok videos, showing the injuries she sustained after wearing a claw clip in a car.

“I was very lucky that I just needed staples,” she explained.

Paisley says she was a passenger in a car with her friend when the accident happened.

“She turned really hard and we were going just under 20 miles an hour (32km/h) and we rolled. And the back of my head hit a metal bar, which lodged the claw clip in the back of my head. My boyfriend was there, luckily, and my cousin and they literally ripped the roof off … to get me out.”

They drove Paisley 45 minutes to the nearest hospital.

“When we got there they immediately took me back to get a CT and x-rays of my head and chest to make sure I didn’t have any brain damage, which I was very lucky I did not. They gave me five staples in the back of my head, they didn’t move my hair or nothing, they literally stapled in the wound.

“Yesterday was the first day I could wash my hair since the accident, it’s been four days. I cannot brush it, it hurts too bad. I do not remember anything from the accident, everything that I’ve just said is what I’ve been told about it.

“I’ve gotten many, many, many comments from people who have been in wrecks and died from having a claw clip in their hair because it caused too much brain damage and it was permanent. I was very lucky. It could have been so much worse.”

Claw clip warning

Incredibly, Paisley’s claw clip didn’t even break, with hospital staff handing it back to her once it had been removed.

It’s prompted dozens of videos warning women to remove claw clips before they start driving.

“Women who are driving with claw clips in their hair are getting into crashes and these claws are embedding into their skulls,” warned TikTok user and nurse Amanda. “Don’t take any chances, take out your claw clip.”

  • I can’t even wear a high pony tail when I’m driving it annoys me too much, so my claw clips are only used for evenings or around the house.

  • Oh my gosh, that would be horrible. I keep them in my car to put my hair up when it’s hot. I guess I won’t be doing that anymore.
