Sometimes as a parent it’s nice to have a place of your own, to relax and unwind.

Whether you’re hoping to work your parents retreat into an extended part of your bedroom, or you want to transform your spare room/guest room into your own little oasis, there are plenty of ideas to help get you started.

The most important thing to remember is that you don’t need to have an entire room dedicated to your parents retreat if you don’t have the space. Many people don’t have the luxury of spare rooms to use in this way, but this doesn’t mean you have to miss out.

Guest rooms are ideal to use as parents retreats as are large bedrooms with extra space for you to put a recliner and coffee table by a window for example – or even just a simple corner in your loungeroom could work a treat!

Balcony retreats

Do you have a balcony that runs off your bedroom? This is the ideal place to create a parents retreat.

Ensure you have comfortable seating and a coffee table or small dining table, so that at the end of the day you can both sit back and relax together and enjoy some downtime.

To ensure the space is suitable for after dark enjoyment, use flameless candles as the table’s centerpiece to create soft, ambient lighting that will promote relaxation.

Bedroom retreats

If you need to work your retreat into your existing bedroom, here are some expert tips. A retreat is all about relaxation, and unplugging from the rest of the world.

Make your bedroom a gadget free zone so that you don’t have the distraction of computers or phones reminding you of work or that ever-growing ‘to do’ list.

Use soft, gentle tones of blue and green to create a peaceful atmosphere. Bedside lighting is really important. It needs to be bright enough so that you can read a book without straining your eyes, yet dim enough to create a peaceful, relaxing atmosphere in your bedroom.

For something a little different, pendant lights in the bedroom is a popular trend right now. Just ensure they are at head height when you’re sitting up in bed so that they provide the perfect illumination for night time reading.

Rid your room of clutter. This is really a big one. No peaceful sanctuary is full of bits and pieces. Minimise what you have in your bedroom and store, give or throw away what you don’t need or want.

Guest bedroom/parents retreat

For guest bedrooms that can also double as your parents retreat, apply the same principles as you would to your own bedroom and also add in some fun, eclectic items that also promote relaxation and calm.

Himalayan Salt Lamps are said to have a number of health benefits including helping improve one’s sleep, assisting to get rid of headaches and even enhancing your immunity. They also make a stunning feature when they’re turned on or off.

To create your very own parents retreat you don’t necessarily needs loads of extra space in your home or apartment.

By maximising the space you do have and by making some clever furniture and lighting choices you can create your own private oasis almost instantly.

  • Some good ideas.. but with a 10 year old and 13 year old all our parents retreats have become boys space. Might have to change things around and take over their old playroom. Would work with some of these ideas 🙂

  • Our room is our retreat and the kids understand this and now are great at removing their things out of our space. They also love spending special time in our retreat with us

  • Better still, see if the grandparents will have the kids for a few hours. Or an Auntie perhaps. You may be able to help each other out. That way have have no interruptions from your kids. If your mobile phone rings don’t answer it unless you think it may be an emergency.

  • Some nice ideas but we definently don’t have an inch of spare space that’s not kid filled. Maybe when they’re all a bit older and have less toys and equipment and “stuff” lol.

  • Also; I love scented candles; they look gorgeous and smell beautiful. Just make sure they are away from little fingers and blow them out too!
