Hello!

A professional baseball player has hit out after his pregnant wife was forced to clean up her children’s mess after on a plane.

Anthony Bass, a pitcher for the Toronto Blue Jays, took to Twitter to slam the flight attendant for ‘making’ his pregnant wife, Sydney Rae Bass, get on her hands and knees to clean up the mess left by their five and two-year-olds after eating popcorn.

“The flight attendant @united just made my 22 week pregnant wife traveling with a 5 year old and 2 year old get on her hands and knees to pick up the popcorn mess by my youngest daughter. Are you kidding me?!?!,” he captioned a photo, which showed the popcorn mess.

His tweet was met with a mixed response. Some supported the flight attendant, with one person responding: “Be a decent human and if you’re going to give your kid popcorn on a plane be prepared to pick it up. My toddlers loved Cheerios but they were messy, I would never had served them cheerios on a plane.”

The commenter continued, “Pregnant women can bend. They may not want to but the solution to that would be to not give your child popcorn on a plane.” However, Anthony explained that it was actually the airline who gave the popcorn to the children, not his wife.

Anthony’s sister-in-law, country singer Jessie James Decker also came to the defence of her sister, writing on a now-expired Instagram story:

“My sister @sydneyraebass just texted me from her flight on @united. As you know, she is five months pregnant, high-risk, and also traveling alone with her two small children. Blaire accidentally spilled some popcorn in the aisle, and the flight attendant came up to Sydney with a trash bag and a wet wipe, telling her the captain wants Syd to clean up every drop.

“My poor sister is on her hands and knees, crying in the aisle, completely humiliated and exhausted, with her children while everyone else watched. Way to go, United.”

Anthony says United Airlines is ‘taking care of matters with the flight attendant internally’.

  • Not sure that is what I would feed young kids on a plane as they’d probably be very messy.

  • An odd choice of snack in a confined area.
Ultimately, no one can be forced to pick up the popcorn and surely respectful discussion could have reached a different ending with the popcorn being removed.

  • A little compassion can go a long way in this world.

  • The hostess shouldn’t have offered popcorn for the children unless she asked the Mum first. Popcorn is very messy and it’s even worse for children of this age. The Captain should have known better than to agree that the pregnant woman should clean up after her children. I’ve been on flights where the adults have made a lot more mess than the children and they’ve never had to clean up after themselves. I’d never fly with this airline.

    • I agree, I would vote with my money and make different choices in the future.

  • I would have expected to clean up any mess my children made on a plane therefore when the flight attendant offered the popcorn to the children the mum should have said no. That way there is no mess and the kids could have had something else. It’s no wonder that the world has to have ‘Clean Up [country]’ days as no one has been taught to clean up after themselves.

  • United Airlines is known for having a poor reputation
The stewardess no doubt was having a bitchy power play moment
After being treated like that I hope Sydney Rae Boss and her family spend their money ELSEWHERE

  • My first thought was “how the heck did the captain know there was a mess?” Did the attendant tell him or did she just say the captain said the mum had to clean it up using the captain as an excuse so she didn’t have to do it? Why wasn’t as broom or something given to the woman to save her being on her hands and knees?

  • This is a bit of a tough one, but you can’t expect staff to clean up every mess a child or adult makes. Yes shes pregnant, but even when I was pregnant I was more than able to clean up my kids mess.

  • Her children, her responsibility. If they were at home she would have to do it anyway. The poor flight attendants are putting with a lot of rubbish from the passengers anyway. I think it’s common sense to clean up after your kids.

  • Mixed feelings about this – as a general rule the plane is going to have to be cleaned up anyway before the next passengers and it’s not a huge amount of mess. On the other hand, 22 weeks is not that far along that you can’t move around easily and I was always very careful about ensuring my kids didn’t leave big messes that others had to clean up. To a certain extent, parents should be mindful of this and not expect other people to do their job for them – they have to clean it at home, so why not when they are out?

  • If she doesn’t want to be responsible for her children making a mess then she needs to have someone with her willing to do that accompany her. The flight attendants didn’t throw the popcorn. They shouldn’t be expected to clean up that mess. I’m over 30 weeks pregnant, suffering SPD, heartburn and HG and have no issue cleaning up after my 17mo if she makes a mess.

    • I highky doubt this. Having had SPD and HG l know that if you really had them, you would physically not be crawl on the floor.

  • I am a flight attendant and it’s crazy how messy and dirty families leave an aircraft. We never ask them to clean it up but some day I really wish I could. There are so many people who are inconsiderate and yes it is who vacuum it up and get on our knees to clean the aircraft on a turn around. Popcorn is an easier mess to clean, better than crushed chips or cheese .

  • When my kids make a mess either I clean it up myself or have them do it. I do however think the flight attendant could have been more considerate her travelling alone with 2 kids and being pregnant.
Popcorn can be messy indeed, but so can the snacks and meals we often get on the plane

  • My pet hate is people spilling popcorn all over the cinema seats and leaving to for others to clean up! Thoughtless and lazy anywhere. Pack more suitable items. If everyone else watched I would think there is more to the story.

  • Popcorn is messy at the best of times, I wouldn’t have taken that snack on a plane. I also wouldn’t expect someone else to clean up a mess my child made. Though I would have asked for a brush/dustpan to make the job quicker

  • Why are you travelling with two kids when high risk

    Reply

  • Two year olds aren’t meant to be eating popcorn. I never expected anyone to clean up after my children.

  • Be a considerate person just in life and in general, not just on the plane. If youre child makes a mess, why do you just expect someone else to clean it up

  • I try my best to clean up after my kids on planes.

  • I always try and clean up the mess my kids make. I hate it when parents just don’t care and let their kids make a foul mess, it’s just disrespectful.
Why is she travelling on her own with two kids whilst pregnant at that stage anyway.
