Camping is a great choice for a family holiday, but travelling with kids can be stressful at times. Here are some ideas for entertaining your kids while on the road, so you don’t have to answer the constant question of “Are we there yet?”

1.  Keep them entertained and play the latest Disney movie

Investing on a DVD player and an assortment of movies will most definitely entertain your family while travelling long distances.  A typical children’s movie can run for about an hour and a half, which is a lot of travel time when you think about it. The kids are usually transfixed on their movie and hardly say anything while being totally zoned out.

2.  Take pictures!

People always say how beautiful the Outback can be while driving, all you have to do is just watch out your window, keep your camera handy and you might catch something unexpected! Don’t forget taking pictures while travelling will generate some great memories for you and your family.

3.  Two words – computer games

Nintendo DS Lite, Playstation PSP or even Smart phones like iPhones and iPads can provide hours of entertainment. It doesn’t really matter what game device you get, there are plenty of games out there from the entertaining to the educational.

4.  Sing along and play some music

Music can be entertaining for everyone, whether you listen to it alone or together, music can entertain for hours on end. Just remember that not everyone likes the same music,  so it wouldn’t hurt to invest on MP3 players for your kids. You can also put audio books on their players and it will supply them with several hours of entertainment.

5.  Play family games

You don’t always have to reach for the latest tech gadget to entertain the kids while on a road trip. Here are some suggestions:

  • I-Spy – An old classic in which one person picks out something that they see and gives a clue to everyone else by saying, “I spy with my little eye…” Then the rest of the family guesses until they finally guess the item.
  • The Alphabet Game – Pick a topic and taking turns, work your way through the alphabet until you hit the letter Z. So if your topic is countries, you would start with Australian and go until you get to Zimbabwe.
  • Scavenger Hunt – This will need to be prepared before leaving for your road trip. It’s simple; give each child a list of things to look out for while driving. The first one that completes the list wins!

Your kids can have all sorts of fun in the vehicle, whether it’s together or by themselves. While we can’t guarantee that you will have a totally stress-free journey, we can say that with these suggestions, you should at least have some ideas to help keep your kids entertained.

  • We recently did an 8 hr round trip to go camping. The best tip I got from a friend was “don’t waste your stop times hassling the kids to eat. Pack stuff you can eat in the car, and use your breaks to let them run around, play on some play equipment and burn off some energy”.

  • We always drive up to my mother in laws home twice a year which is five hours away so entertaining the kids is really important. Since they both own iPads now, the trip has become a lot easier and we always pack snacks as well as drinks, plus stop to get some lunch at mc Donald’s and let them have a play.
