Aussies love to put a local twist on international dishes, and the chicken schnitzel is no exception. But what about marrying a schnitty with fairy bread?
A restaurant chain has been selling what it calls The Sparkling Unicorn – a schnitzel topped with fairy bread and fairy floss. And while some think it’s genius, others are clutching their pearls.
Described as ‘golden crumbed chicken schnitzel with your childhood-favourite fairy bread and clouds of fairy floss’, the Sparkling Unicorn was available at The Bavarian, which has restaurants all over Australia, for the past couple of weeks. And the jury’s out on whether it’s a winner, winner chicken dinner or not.
Mario Felten from The Bavarian said the dish proved very popular.
“It’s been crazy actually,” he told news.com.au. “It’s for grown ups but also for the kids, and the kids especially love it. It’s basically like having two meals in one. You can have your lunch and then your dessert straight away.”
However others took to the internet to share their distaste at the creative meal.
In fact, there’s an entire reddit thread dedicated to the Sparkling Unicorn, titled, “As an Australian I would like to apologise”.
Many commented on the schnitty’s price – which is $35 or $50 with extra toppings.
Here’s just a small selection of the comments:
“Now we now why the British shipped you so far away.”
“I always wondered what drop bear poop might look like.”
“I will go to my government and gently ask for war with you.”
“As a devout agnostic, I’m horrified to discover that Hell actually exists, and that it is located in Australia.”
“Well after that A am sure nobody will ever mistake Austria with Australia again.”
