Everyone wants thick luscious hair and we all go through periods where our locks are lacking some luster. But did you know giving your hair that boost could be as simple as what you’re putting into your mouth?

Whether you are suffering from hair loss or your hair is simply looking a little dull and lifeless, your diet can play a huge part in your hair health and can often be the difference between a good or bad hair day.

Eat your way to a healthy head of hair by making these five foods a regular part of your diet:

1) Eggs

Eggs are rich in biotin, a B vitamin that is essential for hair growth and an overall healthy scalp.

Don’t like the taste of eggs? Mix two egg whites with four tablespoons of olive oil to create a homemade and very natural hair mask. Simply apply this natural remedy to your hair, leave it on for 30 minutes then rinse it out. Other foods rich in biotin for hair health include peanuts, almonds, wheat bran, avocado, and low fat cheese.

2) Spinach

Spinach is a great source of folate and iron, it’s essential for internal health and better yet it can lead to hair growth!

The folate in this leafy vegetable helps build red blood cells, which then carry oxygen to hair follicles – essential for hair growth.

If you have hair loss or thinning hair, add spinach to your diet to increase hair growth and prevent further shedding.

3) Capsicums

Yellow, red, and green capsicums are an excellent source of vitamin C, vital in maintaining healthy hair.

Vitamin C is necessary to ensure that there is enough iron in the red blood cells to carry oxygen to the hair follicles. Vitamin C is also used to form collagen – a structural fibre required for healthy hair maintenance – and it’s great for the skin of course.

Without sufficient vitamin C intake, hair can become dry, and susceptible to splitting and breaking easily.

4) Lentils

Iron-rich sources of protein such as lentils are crucial for cell growth including hair cells – particularly critical if you are experiencing hair loss or thinning hair.

They provide loads of internal benefits, while encouraging hair growth and healthy cells. Other vegetarian sources of iron-rich protein include; tofu, soybeans, starchy beans, and black-eyed peas.

5) Sweet potato

A personal favourite of mine – sweet potatoes are rich in vitamin A and beta-carotene, which is excellent for people with hair loss or thinning hair as it boosts the scalps natural oils to prevent dry and lifeless hair and also promotes cell growth.

Other beta-carotene rich foods that promote hair growth include foods such as carrots, kale, dark green lettuces, asparagus, and pumpkin – which can all work wonders on your hair.

Your hair requires a regular supply of key nutrients and these five foods are filled with vitamins and minerals to assist with healthy hair and luscious locks daily.

Eat the correct balance of nutrient-dense foods and you’ll to give your hair what it needs to remain shiny and strong.

  • Hmmm, I eat all of the above except for Lentils. I’ve found my hair to be at its healthiest now I wash it less – only two times a week. It took a little getting used to, but now my hair is loving it.

  • Here’s another tip: Coconut oil.
Coconut oil has high amount of medium chain triglycerides, one of the main components for promoting healthy hair growth. It helps keep hair healthy from inside out – as a part of your diet. Hair won’t absorb the nutrients from the oil but it will give you a healthy, vibrant sheen to the hair.
