Hello!

Hi mums, my little one is just shy of 6 months and her health care nurse said she should be babbling by now. She has met all her other milestones and seems to be trying to figure out crawling at the moment. She is a very happy baby, very alert, listens intently, makes eye contact and watches to see where myself and my husband are in the house but now I’m worried about her being quiet. Any advice to put my mind at ease would be greatly appreciated.

  • I wouldn’t worry about it, it will come. Just make plenty of sounds yourself, sing talk read and make simple sounds

  • I really wouldn’t worry yet. If everything else is fine, then she might just be a bit slow with this. It’s not a precise science.

  • My baby did the same. SHe was quite. Now she says dad..she skipped the gaga goo goo sounds and jumped straight to words. She still hardly babbles. Just says dad all the time.

  • Every baby does things at their own pace. The ‘milestones’ they are supposed to meet is just a guide.. She will talk when she wants to.

  • Each child develops differently and I think sometimes a lot of health care nurses forget this and just go by the books.
I would suggest just talking as much as you can to your daughter and maybe play some kids music or animal sounds which she may start to copy.

  • there are some good comments here

  • she will just not ready yet

  • Give it a few more months and see how she goes. every baby is different. Einstein didnt talk until he was about 5 years old!

  • My little girl is 6 months next week and like yours, she’s alert, trying to crawl, has met all her milestones and is usually a very happy baby and interested in everything going on around her. She’s vocal, but I’m not sure I call what she does babbling. I’m not worried in the slightest. These things don’t happen exactly at 6 months, 9 months etc. Try not to worry. She’s probably focusing on something other type of development that is less obvious.

  • Ignore the milestones! Unless she is years behind then don’t compare… Because every child is different. If she is happy then she is fine.

  • Do you talk to her a lot and tell her everything, this will help her with learning to talk

  • How is she going? my little one has exploded with noise! She has taken to yelling +a+t ev+eryone and everything..even the dog cops it!

  • All babies have their own pace of development… you will stress your baby out too if you are overstressed…

  • i would not worry about this

  • I read a book from the start cant remember the name the importance of reading to children/babies from when their first born, it helps them develop their words. Make it into a game. Even if its looking at the pictures and pointing to the item/animals etc example cat point to cat. singing songs with them is another great way. All children a different some children start crawling when they are 6 months and some 10 months or later. Not all are the same. Keep talking to your baby.

    Good luck

  • All bubs develop at different stages.

  • Perhaps some extra time spent baby talking or singing to bub by you and others would help, a little sesame street? I’ve found babies usually develop with a bit more brain stimulation or activity around them.

  • I agree each baby is individual, be aware of milestones but dont put too much pressure on them, if it makes you feel better my 7 month old has only just started babbling! I’ve started talking to her much more about our daily activities!

  • This is what I hate about health nurses & parents comparing their bubs to yours, it makes you worry & most of the time it is about nothing. Are you worried with her progress? If not then don’t spend another minute questioning if something is wrong. At 6mths someone’s baby may be crawling, babbling, have teeth, sleeping through the night, eating solids etc etc & your baby may only be doing one of them. They all develop differently so do not stress :)

  • All bubs develop differently, I wouldn’t be too troubled yet however, perhaps talk to gp.
