After school - Mouths of Mums

Hello!

Each night I read to my daughter, and she reads a book back to me as well. We’ve also recently started doing a “word of the week,” where we pick one big word and try to use it in different ways throughout the week—this week’s word is scrumptious. It’s been a fun way to help build her vocabulary.

I’d love to hear what others are doing with their kids, any little routines or ideas that have worked well for you?

  • I made home-made cards with words on them written with a black marker in small print. Lots of words like I, the, they, them, can, We, then added nouns and adjectives like house, car, boat, doll, truck and jump, skip, run. I started off the cards and we added words as we went along. I kept these cards in a shoe box and the kids would like to play with them often. I had my kids make up sentences by placing the cards together. We would make up to four simple sentences and then they loves to make up more. I had them do this whilst I was cooking dinner and they placed their sentences together. I had three children so our word box was so full of words they had fun sorting them as well into alphabetical order as they older. Fun whilst learning!

  • That’s actually a great idea, I haven’t heard of this! I’m glad I’ve read this, going to implement this into our routine!

  • My youngest is 12 years old and has Down syndrome. She functions on a level of a 3-4 year old whilst she is in year six of a main stream school. She reads a simple book now and from reading to her , we now read every evening a book whereby she reads to me. After that we daily write a list of words that are used a lot. For the rest I don’t do homework with her as she gets cognitively very tired after a day of school

  • What a great idea! I loved reading to and with my boys when they were younger. I wish I had thought of doing something like the word of the week. Such a fun way to incorporate learning, words, spelling etc into everyday life. I feel like that is the best way to learn.

  • I absolutely love the word of the week! I’ll definitely do that with my toddler when as he gets a little older. After daycare days the immediate task is a bath (so. much. sand), then a snack and play while I finish dinner off. Every night we read 2-3 books and he loves it
