Hello!

I will be traveling to the UK in a couple of months with my daughter. She will be 21 months when we go and my partner will not be with us…. I was hoping to get some hints/tips, bribes or advice on traveling long haul flights with a toddler who is very active. I am buying her a ticket as I know they can travel for free at this age but I would rather not struggle with her on my knee! Any advice will be great! Thank you, Katie

  • You’re off to a great start by purchasing a ticket for her do she has her own space. The longest flight I’ve been on with my kids is 5 1/2 hours, so I haven’t really got anythings for you

  • Quite often airlines will sit mums with small children’s next to empty seats for the extra room, depending on how full the plane is. Quite often the air hostess’ will help out by taking bub to give you a rest.

  • Really very interesting comments on this!

  • Im the same boat except my baby boy is 10 months and always constantly wants to move. He will be on my lap and im so scared of the flight and how hes going to act. Im going to put youtube nursery rhyme videos on my phone that will keep mine quiet for about a half hr on my 8 hr flight! Agh. Hope all goes well for you.

  • Find the cartoon channel quickly. Give them space if you can to stretch out and rest. That’s all you can do.

  • Have a back pack for her with her favourite toy, drink, snacks and a whole bunch of new colouring books and none noisy toys. Good luck!!

  • Hope all these tips come in handy cause i found a few really good ones aswell!

  • Hope your trip went well! You are very brave for taking her on a long haul!

  • there are some good comments here

  • How did you end up going?

  • There are some herbal sedative options to help her sleep if she is tired or anxious.

  • Take a bag full of your own snacks and food, as well as ensuring your inform the airline that you will be requiring child/baby meals. Lots of books, things to draw or colour in. A great idea is to buy a brand new toy, so there will be the added bonus of ” new toy” excitement, which will kill a few hours at least! I bought my daughter a book of paper dolls, with lots of clothes and accessories to dress up the dolls – she played with these for most of the flight! You can request a bulkhead seat, which are the first row of a section, snd give you a little more legroom, so your child can play on the floor in front of you. With regards to sleeping, take pj’s to change into, so she knows its “bed time”‘ also if she has her own favourite blanket or pillow, this will help. I take Phenergan to give to my kids if they just won’t settle down, but make sure you have tried it on your kids before the flight, as sometimes it can have the reverse effect and hype them up! I know some people don’t like “drugging” their kids, but when you haven’t slept for almost 24 hours, and there is a plane-full of disgruntled passengers glaring at you because your child won’t stop talking/screaming/ running around, you will try anything! Good luck!

  • Hope some of these suggestions helped

  • I would love to go to the UK

  • A friend of mine did this and said that they best thing they did was to calculate the hours and make sure they had lots of snacks and food. So they allowed 1 hour to settle in to the plane environment (playing with the seat, the head monitor, blanket, books etc) and then activity, movie, ipad games/videos, eat, nap etc.

  • How was it in the uk

  • How did it all turn out?

  • How did you end up going on your trip?

  • Lucky they give the kids activity sets, in flight movies, and ipods are a great distraction on a long flight.

  • What did you end up taking for the trip?
