Hello!

One mum has messaged us asking “Hi, At the moment my husband and myself are trying to help our eldest son who is 4 out of wearing ‘pull-ups’ during the night. He has been toilet trained for about 2 years and having his day sleeps without wearing ‘pull-ups’. We have been trying undies at night for about a week and everynight he has wet the bed (some nights even twice). He goes to the toilet before bed, we have limited his water intake from about 5pm and have even woken him to take him to the toilet when we go to bed but still is wet in the morning. Do any mums (or dads) have any ideas or tips we could try or do we wait until he is more ready? My son actually asked if he could wear undies to bed so we thought this was a positive step. This is the second attempt but with 3 children four years old and younger pull-ups are getting quite expensive! Thanks.”

  • I’ve had a few accidents with my 3 year old who had been fully toilet trained just over the age of 2. I know it’s normal for some accidents along the way and hope it’s just the odd one and bit something that’s going to be ongoing.

  • No water 3 hours before bed!

  • Hope found some answers to help

  • I found giving my children a drink no later than 5 o’clock gave them a better chance of not wetting at night. If they insisted on a drink it was only a little drink.

  • Be patient ! Don’t let him feel your stress about this. You are doing the right things but some children just take longer to get this than others. My son was 5, my daughter 7 before they stopped wetting at night.
If you don’t want him to wear pull ups anymore you need to be willing to wash sheets and change bedding more often.
Whatever you do, don’t get angry or annoyed – it doesn’t help and will just put more pressure on him and make him feel guilty and bad about himself. Let him know its okay and that you know he’s trying.
Be confident that eventually he will stop.

  • i hope you’ve had success

  • A child health nurse might have some good suggestions

  • Hope you have had some success with the night toilet training.

  • How is he going now?

  • This is more normal for boys limiting fluid intake after 6pm and making him have a toilet break just before bed are the best ways I know to help prevent bed wetting. Keep it up your doing a great job.

  • Sometimes they just have to grow out of it.

  • Some really great advice below.

  • its just learning over time. i make sure the kids dont drink before bed and go to the toilet just before going to sleep

  • My son is 6, nearly 7 and still wakes up in a soaked nappy every night. We have tried alarms, waking 4 times a night to take him, no drinks before bed. Dr said after 7 we can get his bladder tested because its normal for boys to still be bed wetting up to 6 years old. Its infuriating but think he is such a deep sleeper he has no inclination to wake and go to the toilet on his own

  • Up his water intake during the day as it helps signal the brain that he needs to wee, dont wake him during the night as its not teaching his brain to wake him when he has the urge to wee, try offering small rewards for a dry bed, contact health nurse for more tips. My daughter is 8 and has only just stopped wetting the bed after completing a bedwetting program. Im not sure at what the minimum age is for the program but it was fantastic. So if I were you id consult a child health nurse and your gp.

  • Thanks heaps ! Wondering this myself!

  • Thanks heaps ! Wondering this myself.

  • How is it going? ;/

  • Boys do tend to suffer this more than girls. You already do the ‘limit’ what he drinks, and getting him up to go to the loo before you go to bed. Maybe a potty of some sort in his room… does he wake or sleep through. Then at least if he wakes a little he may use the potty?

  • limit drinks at dinner time, small drink before bed. go to the toilet and then wake them and take to toilet when you go to bed.
