Hello!

My child has had a cough pretty much since she started child care 8 months ago and doesn’t seem to be going away. Am going to take her to the doctor again, she’s been many times and had many antibiotics but now when I think about it both my husband and I have asthma and hers does sound a bit like it with wheezing/cough. Is it common for child to get asthma?

  • Usually at that age it’s like a form of bronchitis they tend not to diagnose asthma early. Best to check with your local doctor to see what’s going on.

  • I think it’s best to take your child to the doctor and let them work out whether it’s asthma or something else.

  • It is possible your daughter may be allergic to something at the daycare centre. I was shocked to fin out that Asthma can actually be hereditary. I know a family that both children have asthma. They boy had it so severe so many times when he was little that he has an indent in his chest from his lungs collapsing so many times. They had a big nebuliser at home as both children sometimes got asthma at the same time. Their Mum developed it when she was about 40.( Her cousin had severe asthma as a child). When their Mum remarried she and her husband talked about having a baby together, then decided to consult with a specialist. They were told that given the family history there was about a 80% chance that their baby would have asthma too. Bearing in mind that the other two had spent so much of their early lives in hospital- including in ICU- they decided against it, especially the fact that the Mum herself had not long been diagnosed and been sick enough to have to spend considerable time in hospital. I know of another girl who suffers from what they call silent asthma. She very rarely ever has wheezing but coughs so much that she vomits. I also have a cousin who coughs a lot when she has asthma – a really loud deep cough.

  • Apparently Australia has one of the highest incidences of asthma in the world. Worthwhile getting your child checked out by a GP.

  • wow i hope that it is not but yeah a lot of people grow out of it. my dad had it as a kid but grew out of it.

  • Thank you for all your comments!

  • Yes asthma in childhood is very common. Especially with both parents having asthma. I would persist in asking questions and getting some answers. And i think trust your instinct – you know what asthma is like and to hear your child wheezing consistently is a concern. Hope you and your child get some answers soon.

  • Oh! Poor ones! Asthma is not nice at all!

  • Persist and get an answer as an ongoing cough is not good.

  • We took our son to the Dr when he had a persistent cough at age 4-5. The Dr suggested he do a test for asthma. My son couldn’t co ordinate the machine though. So yes young kids can get asthma

  • Asthma is common in childhood and getting another check up with your GP is a good idea.

  • Asthma is common childhood problem – many grow out if it by around mid primary school – but still be aware as it is always something that can be aggravated. Definitely get Asthma checked out by a Doctor.

  • yes my son is hospitalised several times a year with asthma – he is only 2 but was diagnosed a while ago due to our strong family history. I would go and discuss with your doctor making sure you point out the strong family history. Ongoing antibiotic use isn’t good.
