Hello!

My little girl is having a few issues with her girly bits. It seems to be red more often than not. I have seen 3 separate GPs, who all tell me its normal and hormone related. We have tried different creams and thrush treatments they have recommended too but nothing seems to work. Recently she has started getting white/yellow discharge which is often quite smelly. She has showers now and we don’t use soap as per instruction. She’s toilet trained so wet nappies are no longer an issue. She is with me all day long and I have never once seen her play with it, as has been suggested as to whats happening. I feel so horrible for my poor little darling. It doesn’t hurt her to wee but is obviously causing discomfort at other times.
Has anyone else experienced this with their little girls? I’m not sure what to do now!

  • I miss the age of your daughter ?
Did you try an anti-fungal cream like Canestan ?

  • Keep going to the gp until you get an answer. Either the same gp for different tests or different gp for different suggestions. But keep going

  • I’d consider seeing a dietitian.

  • Hope you resolved the problem – it would be good to hear how it all turned out and what you did to fix the problem. Hope your little girl is happy and care free now.
Another suggestion I would add is for her to sleep with no undies on under her pjs or nightie to get maximum airing out at night.

  • I would try a different doctor. Perhaps google and cross reference doctors and their areas of special interest – you might find one who has a special area of interest for kids etc. Also, ask around your friends to see if they know anyone they’ve seen. We found our doctor by doing this and we travel an hour each way to see him because he’s that good. Good luck, I hope you find some answers!

  • i hope that this has been resolved and it was all good in the end. it is amazing that this is seemingly being dismissed by that doc but i hope you got your solution.

  • First I would go back to GP and insist on some advice. Try changing soaps and washing powders to those for sensitive skin. And try sorbent hyperallergic toilet paper, this might help too. A bath in warm salted water might help too, try three heaped tablespoons of salt in a shallow bath and sit her in the bath for about ten minutes. Also I would put her on probiotics. There’s also some evidence that coconut oil and water is good for these type of conditions. I hope it clears up soon.

  • I would strongly advise you t take her to a GP first and they will examine her . An infection can start off external from any reason and if not treated can lead to internal problems. Go to a trusty GP and at least you will feel better rather than guessing what the answer is . Good luck .

  • Keep pressing the GP for answers and listen to the inner voice that needs answers! Hope your little one gets this problem sorted soon.

  • I have a similar problem with my sons bits he devolpted a bad itch and is always so uncomtable I’ve been to so many Gps and demanded swabs but nothing comes up. Tried creams and washes and changing nappies, wetones things i wash him with. I wish i could do something.

  • Apart from not using any soaps or perfumes on her and using different detergent on her clothes etc summer is coming and perhaps letting her go bare for a while could help. she could wear a dress or skirt with no underwear at home to keep her underwear from irritating it and giving it a bit of air. Also are you using cotton underwear as it is much better for you and breathes better than other fibres. good luck it is really frustrating when the doctors cant help.

  • The only things I can think of are 1) Try washing her undies & swimsuits separately in a sensitive soap wash without any scents etc & 2) Do you use either bubble bath or let her play bubbles in the bath as that could be irritating her skin as well. Have you seen a pediatrician or only GPs?? Sorry other than that I have no ideas but my daughter reacted badly to bubble bath or any type of soap.

  • my daughter hasnt but my cousins daughter did they had the same issues with creams and washes etc. Try changing the detergent you wash your clothes in. She did and it stopped her daughters issues down below. It also helped stop some rashes her daughter was also getting on her arms.

  • Thanks everyone. We will try the salt baths in the meantime, great suggestion. I have been using zinc and caster oil cream on her, as I did when she used to get nappy rash.
Will update after our Drs visit. Psycho mummy may just make an appearance if they try to dismiss me again hehe

  • Keep the are clean as you are now and use Sudocream . It works really well. I f you are really worried [ and I know you must be] ask for a referral to a gynaecologist. It is always wise to seek another opinion from an expert in that particular field. There is nothing worse than having problems in that area. Hope your little darling gets better soon.

  • Firstly I feel for you and your little girl. Not knowing is the worst. I too had the same problem with my little girl when she was about 2yrs old and thought there might of been something more sinister happening to her (god forbid) as she regularly attended daycare. I was so upset but was reassured by my Doctor that it was not the case. I was told that it is a common in little girls especially when they are young. Their urine can be quite potent and with their little bodies not yet producing estrogen to combat and maintain healthy hormone levels. My Doctor suggested I just use a barrier cream (im sorry I can not remember what brand I used – just ask your local pharmasist) or zinc cream to protect her skin in that area and to reapply the cream each time she uses the toilet. Also do not use toilet or baby wipes as they can contain ingredients that can cause further inflamation. I used a wet flannel to gently pat the area after she goes to the toilet then reapply the cream. Also avoid bubble baths. I sincerely hope this helps. BTW It does get better as she gets older. Try this site it has good advice http://www.rch.org.au/kidsinfo/fact_sheets/Nappy_rash/ Good Luck !

  • Try a different Dr. Some girls do naturally have more discharge than others but the fact that it is irritating her is the concern.

  • Try giving her salt baths – that is, fill the bath tub (or even a smaller tub) with warm water and dissolve salt in the water. Let your daughter sit in the water for as long as she wants. Salt has disinfecting properties, so it may help.

  • hmm, it sounds like the doctors are just dismissing your concerns :( I think in that case that maybe the only thing you can do( besides asking for a referral to a gyno), is to cause a bit of a scene, unfortunately. maybe just refuse to leave the doctors office, demand that they do a swab or whatever other test they can come up with? I’m no expert, but ive always been told that if its smelly and/or itchy and sore, that its not normal, and it should be checked out. poor kid. hope she gets some relief soon

  • Hopefully that’s not the case. It must terrible to see your little one suffering. I hope the next GP will be more understanding than the first ones!! And will be able to provide you with good advises.
