Hello!

Is it possible to resolve mastitis without using antibiotics? I’d also appreciate any advice on treating the painful symptoms please!

  • Hot shower and massage the lumps out works temporarialy but please, please, please see your GP

  • To relieve sore breasts I suggest cold wash cloths and cabbage leaves, but for mastitis it might require medical intervention.

  • Depends on the severity. The best person to answer that is your local GP. Or maybe a chemist. I used to slip cold cabbage leaves in my bra when breast feeding, this bought massive relief, although short lived. I don’t recall having mastitis though, just breast tenderness/soreness

  • Mastitis can get really bad really quick. If massaging lumps out doesn’t work, I’d head straight to the dr. Wouldn’t risk it! It’s painful! Especially if you want to keep feeding.

  • Cold cabbage leaves. With my first child I had so much milk breasts got so hot & sore & poor baby got choked. Most painful thing to get.

  • i had it with the first bub while i was in hospital. So get the baby in a position so that their chin points towards that infection and baby’s sucking motion will help to dislodge the infection. I know that it sounds really gross but it is only stuck milk and your body is reacting to it. Grab a washer and wet it with warm water and leave it over the sore area.

  • Glad you have seen the Dr and you are improving. sending gentle hugs your way.

  • It depends on your situation. Best to seek medical advice.

  • Cabbage leaves and also a heated wheat bag helps soothe the pain a bit but if you have severe mastitis where you have a fever and your breast is hard and red, you
really will need antibiotics and worse case scenario you will need penicillin. I actually had to have 2 or 3 lots of penicillin to fix mine.

  • Depends how bad it is. I had mastitis with my first baby & it was extremely painful, but I think I caught it early as I was able to fix it without antibiotics. Soak in a really hot bath, with a face cloth on the sore boob so it stays hot. Massage the boob in the direction of the nipple to help push the blockage out. Do this repeatedly (stay in the bath for ages) & repeat each day.

  • try warming olive oil to hand heat and gently patting on affected area then hold warm- not hot heat pad or hot water bottle against it, I also used ginger tea as it has antii inflamatory properties, drinking not bathing, I used to add Epsom salts to the bath and dangle in it.

  • I ended up having physio on one boob, which helped immensely! Also the physio told me to try using an electric tooth brush handle to vibrate on the boob, sounds weird but it worked!! Make sure you don\’t wear any tight fitting bra singlets, that\’s what caused mine.

  • I’m so glad you went and got antibiotics and are getting relief x

  • Massage lumps out in the shower and when you feed. If you have a schedule may be worth just feeding when you need release. I got mastitis but warded it off within a day. Husband and mother in law cared for baby and I slept, took panodol and nurofen, kept massaging out lumps. But if you can’t get rid of it quickly it’s best to treat! So worth booking a doctor’s appointment in case it doesn’t get better quickly.

  • so good that you had the treatment, a healthy pain free mum is best for bubs so you can get on with it.

  • Im glad you used antibiotics. I nearly died with mastitis on my fifth child. I went to the dr on the friday and he sent me away with no antibiotics. By the monday i was feeling crap. I could hardly walk. I did walk the kids to school then went to the drs another clinic near our shops. I just about stumbled into the surgery. He admitted me straight away. I could of only had two lots of antibiotics to pull me through. It took over four days to become right. My blood pressure was 30/40 so it was really low.

  • Thankyou to everyone for the advice!! I did end up taking antibiotics as my doctor assured me it would be best for bub for me to be healthy. I highly recommend the cabbage leaves. They are actually a lot more comfortable than I thought they would be, lol!!

  • Cold cabbage leaves, feed Bub as often as they will take it, in the shower massage the lumps out. Hot compress before feeding and then cold compress after feeding. But if it doesn’t clear I would seek dr advice as mastitis is very nasty if left untreated. The antibiotics that they can prescribe are safe to still continue to breastfeed. Dr knows best, and will base their medical opinion on your current health.

  • I was told hot showers also but I ended up with a breast abscess & unable to feed my bub! Best see your doctor & be guided by them.

  • I was told to massage any lumps or red spots out in the shower. The last thing you want to do is prob feed but babies are the best breast drainers and can suck out the lumps. It is an infection so I think there are antibiotics they can prescribed breast feeding mothers if need be. Aust breastfeeding assoc might be able to give some advice mor a lactation consultant
