Hello!

During this pregnancy I have developed carpel tunnel in my right hand and it’s driving me insane!!! I wake up at least 4-5 times a night to stop the pins and needles, walking with my pram or driving my car I have to constantly shake my hand out. I understand it can be quite common in pregnancy- my question is did anyone else have this problem and if so did it go away after baby was born? Or did you have to end up having surgery?

  • What did you end up doing ? and did it improve after pregnancy ?

  • I didn’t develop it during pregnancy but years later. I had a surgery booked and saw a physiotherapist but cancelled it all when my neighbour spoiled me with a Traction device called CTrac (she is a physiotherapist herself and had good experiences with this). You only have to use it a couple of minutes each hand 3x a day for 4 weeks and the repeat when it flares up. You can order it via HeritageMedical (medical equipment specialists) or email lyn@heritagemed.co.uk

  • Surgery or steroid injections to manage-sorry

  • my mate had the surgery but she had it before getting pregnant

  • I’m currently 34 weeks pregnant and have had it throughout my whole pregnancy. I’ve found resting my wrist on a hot water bottle when I hop into bed has helped me fall asleep otherwise I’m shaking my arm around in the air in pain :(

  • I developed it during pregnancy, it lasted for at least 2 years after, occasionally I get the pain, but it goes away a lot quicker than it used too

  • I had this problem with my 3rd pregnancy, it went away after birth, the hospital have me splints to wear at night which helped heaps, also try and change the way you put your arms while sleeping. Good luck. I know it’s painful and such a disturbance through the night, always let the midwife or doctor know.

  • Hi, mine went away after I had my baby :D

  • I developed carpal tunnel at 34 weeks and it progressively got worse. I would go to bed and have two icepacks and lie there for 10 minutes or so on each wrist to numb them so I could go to sleep. If I woke in the night, I would have them beside the bed to reapply. I didn’t like the idea of being constricted with splints. It did lesson a bit after giving birth but it took almost 2 months for it to disappear completely. A lady in my Mothers group still has carpal tunnel and is looking into diet and acupuncture before thinking about surgery.

  • I didnt suffer with this at all during my pregnancies but have had problems with RSI in my wrist and hand from time to time and found that a product called Elmores Oil was very helpful. I mention this just in case it might be something that could help you.
I believe it is available in Terry White Chemists but im sure if you google you will find where you can purchase this.

  • Thanks everyone! I got a splint and it has helped ALOT!

  • I also had carpet tunnel due to a lot of fluid but after I had my daughter it went away.

  • My daughter had it during her last pregnancy, luckilly for her it went away as soon as she had him..ive had carpel tunnel ops on both hands neither worked.so im still wearing hand splints at night..hopefully yours will go away too..its a rotten thing to have..

  • yes i suffered with “carpel tunnel” whilst i was pregnant and i found that NO it hasnt gone away at all . i went to my local gp and i have to hav a test done as he thinks it coud be a trapped nerve …. i have found that i have it in both hands but it is worst in my right hand and drives me nuts

  • I had carpal tunnel during my pregnancy as I had a lot of fluid, it went away as soon as I had my daughter. No surgery required :)

  • “You say walking with my pram” so I am assuming you have had bub?? Either way I would make an appointment with the doctor and ask advice.

  • I hope it goes away for you once you have the baby. I know some people who’s carpel tunnel resolved after having their babies.

  • i hope it goes away quickly for you

  • Good luck with this, I hope it lessens for you

  • I never suffered from this but my sister in law did and she said it went within the week after she had her baby.
