Common symptoms of celiac disease are diarrhea, decreased appetite, stomachache and bloating, poor growth, and weight loss. Many kids are diagnosed with it when they’re between 6 months and 2 years old, which is when most kids get their first taste of gluten in foods.
Has your little one actually been tested Bec? If so and the little one is coeliac please see a nutritionist/pediatrician, also the coeliac society can help.
If the little one is wheat or gluten intolerant a nutritionist/dietitian will help with foods that are symptom free.
Wishing you all the very best and sending love.
Not 1 but 15 months she went in for another operation and they took biopsies at the same time, Gluten free is so much easier now that when she was first diagnosed
If coeliac disease is already present in other members of your family, then there is a high chance of your child also having it. However it can take a while to get a diagnosis, even for an adult and I would imagine especially so for a child so young.
My mother in law has coeliac but was only diagnosed in the last couple of years after she was very sick for a long time before with the doctors spending ages doing all sorts of tests to try and find out why.
My mum and sister are both gluten intolerant, untested for coeliac, so a chance they are actually coeliac themselves. But it means the same diet.
My understanding is that blood test is the best way to diagnose coeliac and failing that, there are some places in Australia that do test for the gene (DNA) but that’s not cheap and if someone isn’t actually coeliac but intolerant I don’t think it shows any results.
One way to see if your child is coeliac/gluten intolerant is to put them on a gluten free diet, but it has to be for at least 2-3 weeks and can’t be cheated – it has to be strict. No gluten containing foods at all.
If you see a difference in your child after your trial has completed, then you have your answer as far as my family and I believe.
Some people will tell you “it’s ok to cheat a bit and have a little gluten every now and then” I can tell you from my families experiences, it is not worth it, and totally not “ok to cheat”.
It’s like telling someone who is allergic to nuts that it’s ok to have a little nuts sometimes.
I wish you and your child the best of luck, and I hope that they aren’t coeliac or gluten intolerant, as it’s not an easy life, and it is a condition for life too.
The Dr told me it is hard to diagnose at such a young age. If you are worried, if you and your partner get a blood test to see if you carry the coeliac gene then your child is at risk of having it.
I am getting my four year old checked soon but first we are going to an allergist and working on from there. I want to check out all options before a colonoscopy has to be done! As that is the only way to definitely know – which may be why they don’t diagnose young children unless they are really sick or watery poo all the time.
