Hello!

Mr 19 months won’t eat any meat besides chicken and sausages…does anyone have any ideas for getting him to eat a variety of meats?

  • Sorry I’ve no experience with this, I’m a vegetarian myself and raised my kids vegetarian too. I wouldn’t be too concerned though, he’s only 19months old and as long he gets plenty of protein from different sources he should be ok. Keep doing what you’re doing and offer different foods. Tatse is something that develops gradually.

  • I wonder if it is the texture of the meats . Have you tried blending in with vegies or rice etc and see if he can differentiate the difference. Maybe even mix it woth a dark sauce such as bolonaise /tomot base sauces as a cover up and if he likes the flavour, he/she won’t even know .

  • Maybe he is just a natural vegetarian??

  • You can try hiding it in other food, or cover it in something, if he like sauce put a bit of sauce on it, then if he eats do that a few more times, then try to remove the sauce

  • Yes I still have problems getting my 3 year old son to eat meat. He doesn’t like bacon but will eat sausages or chicken nuggets. We try a variety of differnt things and a reward chart. Smaller portions also help. When I find something he will eat I let him help cook the meal the next time we have it

  • Make dinner interesting for him, make shapes and tuen dinner into a little picture on a plate, they think its fun and do try the new foods introduced to the ‘pictue’

  • Have you tried roasts with beef and pork and add lots of gravey it also moistens the meat.

  • just keep him trying him on little bits at a time and see if encourages him to eat some so he can get something he likes works

  • Do you do Roasts? Ive found that most kids will eat lamb, pork, beef or chicken if its roasted with roast potatoes and gravy.

  • My son was like this too when he was young. Just try to get him to eat a little of what you cook, and then ensure he eats other healthy protein foods along with plenty of vegetables. By encouraging him to eat a little bit each night he will eventually develop a liking for other meats. This is where patience really is a virtue as you don’t want to make meal times a battle zone but you do want to encourage healthy eating.

  • My daughter is nearly 3 and I get her to help cook the meals then she is more happy to try it. She has been helping since she could stand on a chair ! She rolls lamb balls (rissoles) she helps stir stuff, rubbs marinade on meat etc.

  • I have had the same problem with both of my girls (now 9 and 6). In fact, the six year old still struggles with some meat. She just seems to chew and chew, but can’t seem to swallow it. Apparently my mum had the same problem as a child!

My solution is to stick to minced meat, along with chicken and fish. There are a lot of dishes you can make with minced meat (try googling recipes if you need ideas), and you’re not limited to just minced beef.

I also casserole meat, and I recently discovered that if I buy steak that’s intended for stir frying, it becomes really, really tender if it’s casseroled. It falls apart, so my kids can eat it easily. My other trick is steak and kidney (it’s my English heritage, but I realise not everyone likes kidney). Kidney is so tender that my kids actually seek it out, and love it.

I hope these ideas help you!
