Hello!

The dentist wants to put 2 crown caps on my 6 year olds teeth instead of fillings. She says its quicker and easier – no need for numbing. and he will lose those teeth in 3 years anyway. I’m not sure about his mouth looking silver when he talks.
Has anyone done this? happy or regret it?

  • My grandson has just had this done. I haven’t noticed any silver though. . I have a feeling they now use a product that matches the teeth, so not noticeable. Ask your dentist to confirm this.

  • My son had a few issues with his teeth and going to the dentist. He had to go on the wait list to be put under for his dental work after some traumatic experiences at the dentist. He had a few crowns put on, and protected his teeth. So what if you can see them? Don’t you want what’s best for your child? And yes they will come out with the tooth when they are ready for the adult teeth.

  • Have you googled the issue? It seems that crowns are sometimes necessary for chipped or broken teeth, and usually colour is no issue at back of mouth, but maybe not at front. Second opinion would make sense as would doing some of your own reading, given what you’ve been told. I was told to get fissure sealing for my kids to coat the tooth (in various colours). I wonder if that is an option too?

  • I don’t have the experience, but crowns are way more expensive than fillings! Get a second opinion. If crowns are the best option to keep the teeth in, I’d go for it, but if fillings are better, I’d look into that more.

  • Best to seek another opinion if you’re not too sure

  • Having worked for a dentist it is important to hang on to their baby teeth as they actually are an anchor for their permanent teeth underneath. Amalgam fillings (silver) are the strongest product to use, but composite resin fillings (tooth coloured) can also be used. The baby teeth roots start to reabsorb as the permanent teeth start to erupt so you have to weigh in how long the baby teeth will need to stay in place.

  • I would definitely get a 2nd opinion. We were told my 6yo needed to get his bad teeth out (molars included), would have needed to go private as well as he would need to be put to sleep (would have cost us 5k!). Went for a 2nd opinion and turns out we didn’t need to go through any of that. He just had fillings in his bad teeth, while we wait for them to fall out.

  • Sorry not help here. Maybe just ask for second opinion?

  • Do they have to be silver? If they were white, I’d say go for it. I’m pretty sure they can do that. Ask.

  • My now 11 yr old had on age 4yr 10 teeth (yes 10) and 2 molars removed and 2 crowns placed on molars due to decay (she’s a foster child and victim of neglect). Reason the crowns were placed had to do with the quality of the molar, the years to go before she would loose them and the function of the molar.
The enamel of baby teeth is thinner than on adult teeth. This means cavities tend to spread more easily and usually affect a larger area of the tooth. Crowns are necessary when a tooth decays to the point that a filling is no longer a treatment option.
Now I don’t know about the quality of the molars of your son. When in doubt I would go for a second opinion, or consult a pediatric dentist.
