Hello!

We have a fox trying to get our beautiful chickens and ducks. We have secure fences, an electric fence, dogs etc but the fox is just hanging around looking for his chance. After a few google searches I have found that some people recommended Vinegar, others “Get the boys to pee outside” so there is a human scent. The council recommend I trap it and kill it in a humane way? I guess I could buy a trap but I would have no idea what to do if I caught him. Does anyone know of any ways to deter foxes? Thanks.

  • I know of the problem from experience. We always made sure that the chicken coupe was solid and secure and the chickens well locked in the night.

  • Pretty much all you can do is to keep checking your fences, ensuring they are secure. And I would try the options of vinegar and human urine, anything is worth trying as a deterrent. Or maybe you could feed it, then it wouldn’t be interested in your chooks, it would encourage it to return. But it seems to be doing that anyway. I wouldn’t be comfortable with the catch and kill though. Nor the poison option. I wouldn’t be happy to kill it in any fashion

  • I think your question is quite unique and interesting, but unfortunately I don’t have any recommendations.

  • unfortunately they are a Wiley introduced pest and incredibly relentless in getting what they want… Most of my friends shoot them – perhaps city people would be shocked with this… You really have to go down about a metre and make your chook pen like Changi Prison – also good quality lid, as they bite or scratch through the cheap stuff

  • there are some great ideas here…thanks

  • Have you tried a fox light? Google it they are about $90 and I’ve been told they really do work. It is preferable to catch and kill because they will just continue to kill elsewhere.

  • Hope you managed to find a way to deter those foxes, wanted to know if you decided on using a baiting program?

  • So how did you end up going?

  • I detest foxes. They are a damn nuisance, killed all of our neighbours chickens and when I go for one of my long, long walks there is often one that stalks me up part of the road – the sound they make when they get going is blood curdling.

Some councils have baiting programs, you would need to contact yours.

  • did you have any success

  • A friend had possum problems and got one of the ultra sonic devices – maybe they make one that will deter foxes too

  • sorry I have no idea, I guess if there is food for them to take, then they will keep coming back

  • Although the advice on this page is U.K. based, there are some good ideas that may help you. A friend of mine who lives in the country had some success with ultrasonic deterrent devices.

  • I am amazed to hear that alpacas act as fox deterrents – wow! I will have to make this suggestion to my friend who has had problems keeping chickens before of foxes.

  • Are you on a property? I’ve recently read that alpacas deter foxes. A bit extreme perhaps, but if you have the room could be a great solution.

  • Make sure they are locked up safe before dark. Alpacas work well, so does a rifle!

  • All the time you have chickens and ducks I’m afraid your going to get foxes, all you can do is make sure they are put safely away and the foxes can’t get into their areas.
I’m sure if you put a trap out and catch the fox another one will come along in a few days and your be back to square one.

  • Are you on enough land for alpaca`s? My Mum has 3 acres, she was having problems with foxes taking her hens, I suggested she buy 2 alpaca`s which she did, she has had no problems since, she`s had them for over 3 years now.

  • A rifle should do the trick!!! I would keep the chooks locked up at night though!
