Hello!

Okay so this is my first baby and I’ve tried to Google it but no luck. Do you have to pump breast milk or can you exclusively breast feed?

In all the lists of things to buy for your baby it always says to get all the bottles and pumps and breast milk bags etc. Is there no way you can exclusively breast feed? Do you always need to pump as well? Obviously I know in some cases it’s unavoidable but I just wanted to know if you absolutely had to.

  • I bought a pump. Was told not to for at least 3 weeks, but my right nip was so sore on day 3 the midwife has suggested pumping from that side. And also when my son dropped like 20g she has suggested topping him up from what I pumped as well. But from 8weeks old onwards my son was exclusively breastfed as he for some reason just started to refuse bottles.
It is handy to have the pump, you can build a stash if you need it.

  • TBH I think it is just a marketing gimmick!

  • You certainly can exclusively breastfeed! A Hakaa/ soft manual breast pump is very useful in case you need to pump off excess ( in case bub sleeps through and your boobs hurt, or you need to leave bub with someone when they are older to see a dr or something), but not essential.

  • I didn’t have to pump at all but all mums are different. Some have to and some don’t.. I had a pump I used it maybe once the whole time and didn’t end up using my emergency milk in freezer

  • I’m 5 months into my breastfeeding journey (first baby) and have not pumped once. I’m really blessed to have a great supply and on the two occasions I’ve needed extra milk for a bottle have been able to hand express enough in about 10 minutes.
Everyone is different in what their body is able to do and what they choose to do. Unfortunately with your milk you don’t really know until it has come in and settled. Xx

  • Definitely possible to exclusively breastfeed however it’s all supply and demand I had low supply and found that pumping in between feeds helped! And helped when I had mastitis and bub wasn’t strong enough to get the milk from infected side so it help to pump! I honestly brought my pump as a just in case and ended up using it quite a bit

  • I didn’t have to pump. Everyone is different. I did pump with my 3rd when I needed help with supply and when I went back to work.

  • It promotes more supply if you dont enough

  • You don’t have to if you have enough supply but it promotes more supply if you dont

  • You can definitely exclusively breastfeed if that works for you

  • I didn’t pump at all with my first two, started pumping with my third as he was in hospital for a month. Haven’t pumped at all since he was 2 months old, I find it too time consuming. My husband misses giving bottles, but he agrees that it’s not worth it – and bub doesn’t really like bottles anyway.

  • I found I had to if it gets super full or I miss a feed because I wanted to feed bub formula. This happened at least once a day as I wanted the hubby to bond with bub so wanted him to feed formula. Otherwise if you are exclusively bf and you have a steady supply you may not need to

  • Nope you don’t need to pump. I did with my first and that was the only time I did. I’ve EBF my three other children.

  • You can exclusively breastfeed if you want, you don’t have to pump if you don’t want you. I didn’t pump at all and am 6 months in and going well. I found it so less stressful cause I don’t have to worry about cleaning bottles and stuff.

  • You can exclusively breast feed, no problem at all. The only thing is that it really ties you down – you pretty much always have to be near your baby at feed times.

  • I exclusively breast fed without a pump until i got a blocked duct. So now i have the pump there to help clear blocked ducts but i do not pump otherwise.

  • You don’t have to pump feed. It’s a choice. I think pumping can help with the amount of milk produced

  • I was gifted my breast pump from my sister. I barely used it. The only time I used it was to have some milk supply in the fridge in case I needed to go out or sleep etc. my baby never took to a bottle so the only use I had For the stored breast milk was used in rice cereal and that’s about it.

  • My kids are 31 and 28, so it’s been a while since I’ve breast fed. Back then, if breasts were engorged, painful or uncomfortable I would express a little to give me relief. Other then that, I didn’t do it

  • I only pumped when my babies slept longer through the night and I woke up full and sore. I also sometimes pumped after feeds to fully empty, especially if they had had enough only after being on one side.
