Hello!

I would just like to ask – do you leave the heater on through the night or do you turn it off when you get in the bed? I do leave it on really low but I have been told by a colleague that I should turn it off when I go to bed. I just want to know what other people do. Thanks for your responses.

  • Turn it off – electricity is too expensive.

  • I would worry about an electrical fault starting a fire while we are all asleep, so for that reason I turn it off when I go to bed.

  • I’ve never left the heater on while I sleep.

  • I leave it on really low. When we had an energy audit done, we were advised that turning it off actually uses more energy, because it’s harder to heat the house up the next day. Better to leave it on low.

  • I think it depends on what heater system you have. I grew up in the Netherlands where everyone has Central heating and when the night temperatures dip well below 0 degrees in the winter, it’s normal to set the temperature to 15 C in the night. When you would turn it totally off in the night it would actually take far more energy to heat it up during the day. Keeping it on low was more cost and energy effective.

  • I never leave anything (except the fridge) on. Appliances left on can overheat and cause fires.

  • Your body acts as a heater under the right thickness of covers. Not only is it expensive but bad for the environment to leave the heater on all night.

  • we have ducted heating and in our last house we left it on set to about 12 degrees just to keep the chill off the air, this house it is really loud so we don’t leave it on. My youngest two kids were born prematurely so we used it mainly for them. This house doesn’t get as cold either so it hasn’tneeded to be on

  • I turn it off. It’s too dangerous to leave it on all night.

  • Definately turn the main heater off for electrical costs but have a safe one going in my daughters room if it’s too cold.

  • Unless it is the air con or fan , I don’t leave any heating systems on . I wouldn’t be able to sleep at night as I am worried about fire hazards .

  • When the chap came to service our gas ducted heater he said you can set it to come on in the am at 12 degrees when we go to bed and if the temp drops to 12 it comes on automatically. It is not economical to have it running at 21 overnight and not healthy either. You get overheated. He said the unit lasts a lot longer if you are not running it flat chat all day and night with its ring hanging out! He had a sense of humour! lol!!!

  • No,never, that’s how accidents happen & people’s homes catch on fire.

  • I put ours down to 10 degrees overnight as otherwise it gets so cold I wake up!

  • Turn it off. We are warm enough in bed with our covers on so don’t need the added expense nor drain on the environment.

  • I personally don’t trust electric blankets. Even when new they can catch fire even if they have only even been slept on and nothing heavy been put on them. My brother had one that was switched off at the switch but had a fault and caught fire during the day while my sister-in-law was out for a few hours shopping. She walked into the house and it smelt. It was smouldering and flames appeared after she opened the bedroom door. It actually melted the switch on the blanket itself in the off position. It also started to burn a fairly new specially designed orthopedic mattress. Lucky it didn’t happen at night. My brother and sister-in-law are both such heavy sleepers that the smoke alarm wouldn’t wake them immediately. Somebody broke in the bedroom window and that didn’t wake them immediately. In case you are wondering, my brother has always been a very heavy sleeper, has always been a non-drinker and very rarely even takes painkillers or other drugs.

  • no way would i leave a heater on during the night. accidents happen and i would rather be safe than sorry

  • I always turn it off when I go to bed, mainly because my heater is a gas heater. I am a little paranoid. I guess it is better to be safe than sorry.

  • I always turn it off. I sleep better when it is cooler

  • I leave my daughters oil heater on from when I go to bed til the second time I wake up at night, but sometimes I do leave it. If you worry and you don’t mind waking, you can always set an alarm to turn the heater on from 2:30am til you wake to cover the coldest part of the night :)
