Hello!

We are going away for 3 weeks over christmas & don’t want to spend a fortune on take away food, and would like to eat more like we do at home but without lots of cooking and cleaning. I was thinking half home and half bought – ie home made salad with bought hot chicken etc but does anyone have any other ideas that work for their family while travelling?

  • Pasta is of course a quick and easy meal too and what about a spinach omelette /

  • I don’t know if you’ve an oven available ? But a bag of wedges in the oven with onion rings, nuggests, schnitzels, corn on the cob and a fresh salad is quick and easy. I think a good soup is also easily made and you can buy cut up veggies if you wish to speed the process.

  • The pouches you can get for babies, infants and toddlers. There are others for older kids too. I love the jelly myself!!

  • Good question; following the answers.

  • I always put some meat into a screw top plastic bottle, add the marinating sauce. Usually Pasta sauce, red wine, brown sugar and some herbs from the garden. Freeze.
It will usually last a few days in refrigeration. BBQ and is as tender from the marinating

  • Provided you have some cooler bags or a solid cooler, you can buy bread, cheese or other fillings, keep them in the motel fridge overnight and make sandwiches for lunch and snacks ofr the day. Take-aways are Ok for Dinner at night, but you want a cooked meal overy few days. If see a number of trucks parked at a cafe/roadhouse you can guarantee that the meals are very reasonably priced good quality meals. If they charge too much or the food is not good quality the word will get around amongst the truck drivers very quickly and stop using them. Word gets around about the good ones very quickly too. We stopped at a small one night. There were 4 trucks parked there. One left as we were walking into the Cafe. Meals are cooked from scratch – salads are made to order, quick service. The meals are definitely truckie standard. I had a schnitzel and it was the full width of the large dinner plate. We weren’t there very long and another 6 trucks arrived.
There was also free make it yourself tea and coffee at that particular Cafe. It was just south of Port Pirie in S.A. and unlike many others there was plenty of room to move between the tables.

  • yeah for quick meals, get a $1 pizza bread from woolies. sandwiches are great! you can always find a bbq somewhere and if you are lucky, it will be free to use. can’t go past anything ready to eat from the supermarket. make a meal out of cereal lol or spaghetti.
try hot dogs and then you can just microwave it, if your accommodation has one. ya know, if you stay somewhere friendly, or family owned, you might be able to use their microwave without paying extra to have one in the room.

for cheap cooked meals, see where the local meals and wheels are, then you can get a nice, decent meal for around $6.

lol and check out if bunnings have a sausage sizzle going

  • We love things like homemade nachos, also especially over summer fruit, cold, meat and dip platters. Pasta is always quick and easy.

  • BBQ meats are quick and easy to prepare and cook and you can get some pre marinaded ones too then all you do is add a salad.
