Hello!

I know that there are weekly specials and other offers but are there any other tips one can give on how to shop wisely and maybe some some money?

  • Easier said than done, but if you look at what you have in the pantry, fridge and freezer make a plan of meals you could make. Over time you will generally have added to these things and have extra on hand. Taking a shopping list with you can help you remember what you need and may help stop impulse shopping.

  • Check out the discount section of the stores before you get things you need! I always fins milk eggs ham yoghurt ect really cheap and its always things my family always loves!
I also find when we are cutting yhr grocery bill i tend to buy more frozen veggies rather than fresh to let it stretch out longer, dont buy branded names, go for the cheaper item you will find theh will be very similar to the branded one!

  • Menu plan. That way you’re not buying ingredients that are half used for a meal and go off before you need them again. You have a lot less overall waste, too.

  • Be disciplined. Write out a menu for the week or fortnight (however often you shop) work out what you need to buy for this menu. This saves you buying willy nilly. Don’t take your children, epic fail on money saving there. Don’t shop on an empty stomach.

  • Yes!
The product and packaging is overwhelming. But if you avoid snack foods. This does save. If you need a snack have carrots on hand, cheaper. Own baking goes further with flour etc instead of expensive pack of biscuits.

  • Buy a little more ingredients for a meal so you can use that meal twice, look at the supermarket for specials you enjoy, and shop around.

  • Tuesday Nights, I go through the catalogues on the internet for Coles and Woolworths which are the supermarkets I have access to, I check for all half price specials, I only buy the things I use, all our non perishables are half price, I make sure that I get rainchecks if the shops run out, I also date things in my pantry so that I do not waste things going out of date and make sure I rotate my stock, it takes time but you do build up a stock of things and this makes weekly shopping so much cheaper, I also try and cook 2 meals at a time, especially pasta sauces etc and freeze, so I have a spare meal ready to go, saves wastage and time. I buy meat in bulk when it is on special, so always have quality meat that cost the same as the cheaper cuts in the freezer so we eat well but on a budget. I think using left overs is a great way to save money as often even making a little more the night before costs minimal but can give an extra meal and that can save a lot of money over a few weeks, also look for cheap meals, eggs are under rated and can always be used to make lovely meals with salads that are cheap and fresh, my kids always loved egg and bacon pie, which I made with puff pastry, eggs, bacon, tomato, cheese parsley and pepper, cook in the oven, it is delish and serve with a salad.

  • I always buy home brand. and shop at Aldi ‘s!!

  • Menu plan and only shop to the menu; avoid all impulse and temptation purchases.

  • I menu plan our dinners. I find this is good to not buy unnecessary ingredients.
Also i used to have this bad habit of when things are on special buy alot of it..but items i purchased were going stale or off because i had bought too much. Therefore i was losing money. So just be careful not to overstock your cupboards or fridge too much.

  • also embrace a baked beans night or noodle night.

make your own takeaway and get baking paper to wrap it in and go for a picnic- food and getting out of the house, great for budget

    make your own treats

grow a few things in pots like herbs etc

shop at your local market, you will have to get up earlier to get bargains, but it is cheap and healthy food

shop online. you get discounts and special online only offers

  • plan meals, sometimes buying bulk isn’t better, take a caculator or phone

  • I do numerous things.
Firstly I have a price book so I know what the shelf price usually is and then what the ‘best price’ has been. I compare the shops / catalogues to one another and shop for the best price.
I also use flybuys every time I shop and sign up for the emails to get bonus points on shops – I won’t buy something however just for points so you need to watch where you can. You also get vouchers in the mail for discounts / specials etc.
I buy gift cards from some retailers when they are offering a discount.
I watch the petrol prices and buy or fill up when it’s at the lowest price I think it will go.
I shop via the unit price at the shop too just because something is on special doesn’t mean unit wise it’s a good price LOL.
I buy in bulk where I can, I meal plan and make sure I buy what I need so there’s no additional bolts to the shop as that means sneaky things come in.

  • Stick to your shopping list!!!

  • i buy in bulk when i can and shop inbetween stores aldi is great prices are all ways great and local fruit and veg stores are always cheap

  • Buy in bulk. Find good value places, NQR, markets, wholesalers etc join costco. i also make my own pasta, bread, pizza bases, cakes, biscuits, treats, use alternative cleaning products like bicarb and vinegar instead of bleach etc. We have also planted fruit trees and a vege patch.

  • “Couponing” there’s a lot more information on it then I really know, but essentially gathering great and relevant coupons and only buying that which is either couponed or on sale, a bit of hard work and mind power, but friend rage about it.

  • Thanks to all you have answered my question so far. The tips on saving money on the weekly shop are really worthwhile and I will definitely use them when shopping. MOM’S are really great budgeters!!!

  • I do this:
    1. Check catalogues online (Lasoo)
    2. I shop between Woolies, Aldi, IGA and Sams (warehouse)
    3. Sort out your recipes before shopping, get what is on the list only, unless of course there are some good bargains of things I would normally buy, I stock up a bit on those items.
    4. At Sams warehouse I can get the same brands of Shampoo, soap etc…they sell in Woolies for a fraction of the price, even better when they’re on special.
    5. Coming up to shopping day I make sure I use all vegies I have left, I usually do a big vegie bake (delish). Any left over fruit I make things like apple crumble, banana cake.
    6. Know your prices.

This week in Woolies I was buying different types of pasta for $1.00 a packet, we love pasta so over the next month I have some lovely recipes to make.

If you haven’t already got a book of 4Ingredients you can Google their recipes, anything dish that has less ingredients is a cost saver.

    Hope this helps, good luck.

  • 1. Write a shopping list for basics
    2. Have a look at farmers markets for fruit and veg.
    3. Look online and check catalogue for best specials ( I tend to write the prices next to the item on my list and which store it’s at and usually base the weeks meals on the specials)
    4. Shop at a large shopping centre that has all large supermarkets and small business outlets (this saves petrol)
    5. Check the small business and see if they are cheaper than the supermarkets.
    6. Reframe from buying crap you don’t need.
