Hello!

“Since having my baby I noticed my whole body had changed, I still weigh the same but was really flabby round my belly, legs arms, bum ect. So I decided to try the Paelo diet. I started it and on the 2nd night my baby woke up starving I continued for another 3 nights, 5 days in total as my baby was waking up 2-3 times a night just starving I then decided to stop the diet as I thought it was affecting her and just eat my normal food again just cut back the portion sizes and she was back to her normal self within a day. Can what you eat determine how much nutrients your baby gets and does what you eat affect the way your baby sleeps?”

  • I think what you eat can definitely affect your milk.

  • Absolutely ! Everything you eat effects your breastfeeding and with her food intake babies ability to settle. When you’re breastfeeding it’s not a good time to diet, good choice that you stopped !

  • Everything you eat goes to your baby if you breastfeed

  • Yes most definitely! Paleo is supposed to be a very healthy eating plan though, so I can’t work out why your baby would wake starving. That’s weird, just goes to show we really need to focus on what we eat when breastfeeding

  • Oh of course and you have now gone the right way by just cutting back portion sizes. once you have stopped BF you can try it again. your milk is more important atm .

  • I cannot eat garlic, onions or anything with caffeine. Sometimes if your are in doubt it is best to do a complete elimination diet and start from scratch and keeping a food diary

  • I think the issue here is high GI foods (processed simple carbs) is more accessible for our bodies, whereas low GI complex carbs need to be broken down first before they can be utilised. IN the end the healthier diet will be of more benefit to baby, your body may just take a little time to adjust

  • paleo diet has lots of meat. could it be the reason?

  • I find that chocolate kept my baby up but coffee was ok. And also, brocolli made her colicky

  • not really..usually your baby gets nutrients and you are the one to loose out. Nature is pretty good at making sure bub gets the best. The only thing that affected my bubs sleeping was when i drunk lots of milk (he got colic) and onions.

  • I would not be making any drastic changes while breastfeeding without seeking medical advice.

  • Not as far as I know.

  • I would not suddenly change the way you eat, or it will affect your baby, by breast feeding you should loose weight from that over time anyway.

  • I agree with others don’t diet until you finish breastfeeding

  • Yes tjia will effect bub. Talk to your dr or just eat health ad exercise

  • As others have said, I think it would be better to wait until after you’ve finished breast feeding bub before starting a diet. Just do some exercises to burn the tummy fat. It can take quite a while after having a baby for some parts of your body to go back to normal, and the tummy area usually needs most of the work. Don’t push yourself too hard too soon

  • Yes nice words Jackie! :)

  • it definitely affects bubs – I’d leave the dieting until after breastfeeding, just stick to a healthy meal plan with plenty of fruit & veges.

  • spicy foods and coffee can have a bit of an effect on your bub, so just be wary when you’re eating those foods! I’d stay away from restricting your food until you’re finished breastfeeding, you need to make sure you’ve got enough energy, and enough nutrients for the baby :D

  • nothing i ate effected my babies
