Hello!

How do you get a 5 month old to settle down in own bed unwrapped? My 5 month old still sleeps in his bassinet beside my bed. He is still wrapped to get him to go to sleep. He is sleeping in his cot during the day normally for 20/30 at a time, 2/3 times a day. I need to put him in his own room and cot but I have stared the bad habit of putting him bed with me to have a bottle and go back to sleep. Once he is asleep I put him back in his bassinet. He is waking up 4 times a night. I need help to get to settle himself and how do I get around the wrapping to sleep issue, it’s like he needs to be restrained to fall alseep. Help me please mums out there!

  • are things getting better now :)

  • could you try tight wrap

  • We started not wrapping my now 5.5 month old because of the heat and it coincided with her rolling from back to front. We’d find her on her tummy all the time so we started putting her to bed on her tummy without wrapping and she loves it. Always sleeps on her tummy now. I think you’re going to need to put in a week or two of hard work and just put him in his cot each time. Let him cry for 20 mins or so and then go in if he needs resettling. But always put him back in the cot and leave again. Try to only go in evry 10-15 mins to resettle if he needs it. You might actually find that as soon as you put him in the cot of an evening that he starts sleeping through!

  • How is he going now?

  • how are they now? :)

  • How are they going now?

  • Mostly they need time to adjust to eh changes

  • do you need to unwrap him just yet?

  • If that doesn’t work then maybe a sleeping bag might help

  • Have you had any luck since writing this post?

  • It is a comfort thing and makes them feel secure to be swaddled, some babies love it while others are not phased by it.

  • I hope you found a solution

  • I used swaddles for both of my children, however only at night. I always placed them in their own cot for all sleeps and if they became upset, I would give them a cuddle and then put them back down and place my hand firmly on their chest until they became settled.

  • He may just want to be wrapped still? Mine twins were in a Love to Dream Swaddle Up wrap until about 14 months and they slept really good while in it and horrible without one.

  • I understand your desire to not have him wrapped as it gets harder to do as they get older and start rolling and moving around! If he’s not quite ready to sleep unwrapped I’d go with it for now, but maybe you can look into the swaddle suits that are available as an alternative, and that way you could ease the transition from being wrapped to not.

  • There is nothing strange about wrapping to sleep… I would just keep on doing it for a while, especially while u are transitioning from one bed to another. It is a comfort thing. Places like tresillian promote wrapping, even up to two years old!

  • Don’t keep putting him in your bed I did that and I have a two year old going on 3 thy still wakes 3 times a night because she wants to sleep with mum. As for wrapping not sure I think I would just keep wrapping him

  • Tuck him in tightł with the sheets and stick to a routine

  • I made the mistake with my first to keep her wrapped and run in to her unsettled, with number 2 at 5 mths , I popped him in his cot put mobile on and left him there just watching, I just slowing got him used to his environment during the day so at night after his feed before bed I can pop him in relaxed and he sometime has a few screams settle with my voice.

  • I took my girl out of her wrap cold turkey, she was in it for a year and I was getting sick of re-rapping her when she would escape during the night. Cold turkey worked but it was a good 2 weeks before she got use to it. No sleep for mum during that time
