Hello!

How would you go about building a Veggi patch in the back yard of a rental? Do you have to ask for the landlords permission first or am I right to start building?

  • Unless you’re using something moveable (like giant pots) I would ask the landlord’s permission first.

  • The key is being able to leave it in the same state when you leave. So either portable or pots are going to be safest. If you are looking at making substantial changes ask the landlord first, I think most would be happy.

  • Get a raised garden bed / veggie boxes on stands – that way it won’t interfere with the property, you don’t need permission and you can take with you when you leave. Or even try thigs you can grow in pots / tubs / styrofoam boxes / upside down hangers / vertical gardens

  • If you are really building something, I would surely ask for permission. If you just use pots, no need for that.

  • I would just build the garden or get pots & grow them in tubs.

  • I would definitely ask permission just to be sure.

  • yeah so many temporary options. grow stuff that is in season and so that if you move, it’s not a big deal.

  • I would check with the landlord, some have no issue some have major issues and others will put them in for you.

  • we have a kids pool that cracked so we filled it with soil and planted vegies so it’s no big deal to start again if you move

  • There are so many options for gardens including hanging baskets, raised garden beds, large pots, hay bale gardens. But have a talk to your landlord, they may be Oppenheimer to the idea of a large garden! (Less mowing!!)

  • I would use large pots rather than establishing a vegetable garden. That way you don’t need the landlords approval and you can take them with you when you move.

  • If its a portable one you can move it should be fine

  • i saw something on better homes – there are vertical gardens that you can put along the fence and it has sheeting between the fence and pots so there is no damage to the fence

  • we’re renting and we’re growing in a raised garden bed

  • I like the vertical gardens you can get now and then if you move you can take it with you

  • If you are responsible for the yard then as long as you put it back to how it was it shouldn’t be a problem

  • I would just do it, but then again I haven’t rented. It might be better to just check

  • Yes, you should ask first. A lot of landlords will say yes. Otherwise you could plant in something like a couple of big tubs – you can take them away with no damage to the garden.

  • If you’re actually building something, or clearing an area of land to make a vegie garden, then you should definitely get permission from the landlord. You can successfully grow herbs in pots, and also some vegies. Vertical planters are good for some things, and you can get some great portable garden beds from places like Bunnings.

  • Always ask for permission beforehand since the property is not yours (similar to if you was in the workplace, asking permission from the immediate manager prior to doing things beyond your given responsibility).
