  • Our family is similar—two adults and two kids, plus a dog! I’d say we’re spending around $500–$600 every fortnight, depending on extras like cleaning supplies or bulk purchases. To keep things manageable, we’ve started meal planning each week, sticking to a list to avoid impulse buys, and buying some items in bulk when they’re on special.

I also try to cook larger meals that can be used as leftovers or lunches the next day, like pasta dishes or stir-fries. Shopping around at different stores can help too—some things are cheaper at ALDI, for example, so I’ll stock up there when I can. And we’ve cut down on packaged snacks, which adds up fast with kids, by making simple snacks at home. It’s still a challenge with prices rising, but every little tweak seems to help!

  • On average we spend between $150-$200 a week also depending on when we need the expensive items. We have 2 adults, a 2.5 year old, a 1 year old and some chickens.
Lately I’m struggling sticking to the budget so looking at food delivery companies to try make the dollar go further..

  • We spend about $150 a week for 2 adults, a toddler and a dog but we are lucky enough to have 3 supermarkets within a 5 minute drive. The price of living is going up and it’s getting hard

  • Ive noticed we are spending about the same as you, family of 4, about to be 5, 2 dogs, 1 cat and 5 chickens. I also cook for my grandfather each night. It’s so expensive at the moment. Reading through your question for answers too. Thanks for asking.

  • Our household for 2 adults 1 child and 1 dog is roughly $400 a fortnight. I make 95% of our meals from home which reduces costs and breakfasts and lunches are often cheap being egg based. Going to local fruit and veg shops to buy in-season has helped me cut down on the bills too and make a list before you go and stick to it.

  • We are a family of 4 and spend around $400 a fortnight. I plan each week what I need and stick to it. I also she what’s in the cupboard and try and find recipes that use what I’ve already got

  • We’re a family of 3 and we probably spend $400-$500 a fortnight but we eat mostly vegetarian as hubby doesn’t like red meat so it could be higher.

  • Between $200-$250 per week. This is for 2 adults, 2 kids under 3 and a dog. We ship at aldi mainly and get the things we can’t get there from Coles or Woolies

  • When I had four children plus husband to feed I found mince whole chickens or chicken pieces when on special went a long way, so the mince I made into different meals also stewing meat done in slow cooker went to more meals. Winter soup I made helped fill everyone up and good for weekend when cold.

  • Paint it inside and touch paint outside does make a difference, replace curtains makes a big difference as well.

  • 3 adults, 2 small kids and a dog. We spend between $400-450 a fortnight. I cook from scratch and my kids eat a lot of fresh fruit and veg. I tend to buy in bulk when there are really good specials, meal plan and shop online to ensure we stick to the shopping list rather than impulse buys.

  • There are only two of us, but we still spend on average $150-200 per fortnight.

  • We are a family of 5 and spent $150 a week on groceries. The occasion extra shop for milk and fruit, especially during school holidays I tend to spent a little more but usually it’s $150 a week. I look through the specials at the different supermarkets and make a list. I find this the most efficient way to save and spend on essential staples.

  • Two adults and 2 dogs. We spend about $450 to $500 a fortnight. We eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetable which is very expensive.

  • It completely varies and I have found first hand that u spend to what u earn. When I was working in a week paid full time job we could easily spend over 300 for just two adults, now we have a toddler and two adults and is usually around 200-300 per week.
We also live in a small town with an expensive iga of I travel about an hour I can get cheaper woolies/ Coles specials
By is the fuel worth it? Can I be bothered going to multiple shops? Nope!

  • We also shop at different places to get discounts and rewards. Discounts can make a difference to the budget and long term rewards are worth working towards for overall savings.
