Hello!

Any tips for our 3 year old getting grommets and adenoids done? Feeling so anxious after she had a rough start to life with surgeries.

  • My friend’s daughter had grommets and it was life changing for the whole family. (Seriously.)

  • My 3 year old (2 days after his 3rd birthday) had his tonsils and adenoids out a few weeks ago. It was such a better recovery than I thought! Holding them while they put them to sleep is awful, but it’s quite a quick surgery and he was out eating sandwiches and chips within an hour of coming out of recovery! His recovery was fine – a bit rough around day 8 or 9 with pain, but keep up the panadol and nurofen regularly and they should be fine! Good luck :)

  • My niece had this done when she was just over 1, no issues at all and sleeps much better now

  • Have not heard much about it, sounds like minor surgery.

  • Wishing her all the best and hopefully her last surgery.

  • My youngest had grommets and had both adenoids and tonsils removed.
An adenoidectomy is surgery to remove your child’s adenoid glands. Your child may need this surgery if their adenoids have become swollen or enlarged because of an infection or allergies. An adenoidectomy can help if your child is experiencing breathing problems or frequent ear and sinus infections because of enlarged adenoids.
Don’t be too eanxious and trust in your care team.
The recovery can be painful. The current advice after the operation is to eat and drink as normal and just eat crunchy food (whereas in the past it was always advised to avoid crunchy food)!
Stock up on Paracetamol & Ibuprofen before the operation so you have it at home. Alternative these pain reliefs 4 hourly
But I’m sure they will talk you through it at the hospital too

  • Haven’t heard of it. but wish you the best for speedy recovery.

  • Best wishes. I’ve seen this work really well for many kids.

  • Aw hun, sending well wishes. My sister had her grommets done when she was young and was spoilt a little to make up for it. Each of us siblings picked out a little pressie she would have in the hospital, and my parents brought her some cheeky take out to have while there rather than hospital food. She doesn’t remember any of the bad things about it now.
I can understand the stress, my 2 month old will need a surgery in his near future. I’m trying to see the positives, how lucky we are to have these medical interventions available to us. Otherwise I’ll let the worry consume me. Just pour all your love into your little one, they will feel your strength and positivity.

  • My boy had the surgery done in January when he was 3. It’s full on. And painful to watch after the surgery because he couldn’t eat. We also had to stay longer in hospital because he got an infection and needed antibiotics. But I’m glad we’ve done it. It takes time to heal.

  • I completely understand your anxiety. I’d ensure open communication with the medical team and make sure you feel comfortable asking them questions along the way. For your child, I’d be tryint o create some comforting routines, taking a favorite toy along with them, and post-surgery care plans (maybe a special treat, e.g. milkshake) after the surgery is done. Hopefully that can help ease both your and your child’s concerns. Sending positive thoughts for a smooth procedure and recovery.
