The forehead ones have never been acvurate for me.

I have a digital thermometer that can be used on the forehead or in the ear. There’s a slight difference in temperature between the two. What I’ve done tho is taken bubs temp over a few days to get a feel for what her normal base line temperature is.

I too have been told the most accurate temperature reading is given via a thermometer under the arm for littlies

Ive used forehead and ear thermometers and always been suspicious of their accuracy. I was recently in hospital with my newborn and the nurses advised to always use an underarm thermometer as that Is the most accurate (for home use other than rectal) and that any forehead ones are known for being inaccurate. They recommended the vicks fever insight thermometer to me as it reads really quickly. I was always unsure when my toddler was a baby and not even any GP I went to could tell me what was best to use so I was actually really glad and relieved when the nurses gave me this invaluable advice. I also had the district nurse come out a few times after discharge and she used underarm thermometer.

I have tried both and didn’t see much difference in temperature.

I prefer the infrared, easier to use and it changes colour if the temperature is high.
It can also tell you a room or water temperature so it’s really handy.
It was recommended to my mom by a paediatrician.

Personally I don’t find them accurate. I borrowed a friends one, compared it to mine when bubs had temps in the 39’s and it was nearly a degree lower. Thats pretty significant. Also at the doctors i’ve found their temps read lower than at home with my braun thermoscan.

I’ve a digital one and are considering to buy an infrared one as well. Not long ago I was at the Gp and she was using an infrared thermometer just hovering over the forehead of my daughter. She has Down syndrome and sensory issues and many many ear infections whereby the puss is leaking out of her ears (so an ear thermometer isn’t suitable either). They look very convenient.

A friend of mine has both. An infared thermometer you just wipe across the forehead. If it shows green the temperature is normal. If it shows yellow it is raised but not dangerous. If it is red it is a high temperature to be concerned about. Many babies do not like anything in their ears at all. Otherwise you have to hold a thermometer under your baby’s arm. It is your choise what you use. My friend’s 3 year old will use the infared himself. I think the colour is a fascination but he is happy to have his temperature taken. With the digital he would fight against it.
