Hello!

I was hoping you could help me and my family! Four weeks ago my 2 and a half year old daughter gave her dummies to Santa in exchange for some presents. Four weeks on she is still not sleeping, she is very irritable, misbehaving more than usual and just isn’t her usual self. She is usually very outgoing, friendly and bubbly. Since taking the dummy away she has become very reserved, shy and even frightened of people that she would normally talk to. I know this may be developmental and the dummy may be coincidental, however I am considering giving the dummy back as she still cries for it and is in desperate need of some sleep…we all are! Any advice would be greatly appreciated

  • Both of my kids rejected the dummy and I was glad.
Someone I know said to soak it in lemon so it has a horrid taste the next time the put it in their mouth and they won’t want it again or cut it worth scissors and say it’s broken and you can’t get a new one.

  • Honestly if she is struggling that much then there is no harm in giving it to her just for sleep, she is still quite young and it is a soothing thing at that age.
I let my kids have it until 3 where they are in a much better place to understand giving it to the “dummy fairy” in exchange for a present and maybe that little bit older to be able to self settle and sleep without it.
They are babies for such a short time, there is no rush, if they are still struggling then its completely up to you to follow your heart as you know your child best.

  • I am so sorry. We found taking the dummy away was really easy – our son just felt it was time to give it up.

  • no, I did it matter of factly – said he was a big boy now, and the dummy has to go to the babies – so we put them in a bag for the babies in the hospital xxx

  • we put dummies and bottles in a bad, and took them to the ‘babies’ at the hospital. My son was awesome about it x

  • Hope all is well now.

  • BIG TIME!!

  • Hoping that things have moved on smoothly for your family!

  • Good Luck with this, my daughter stopped using the dummy when she got croup.

  • Thankfully my daughter gave up on the dummy herself when she was little but I can understand the pressure you must be under, it may pass or it may persist. You should do what feels right for you and your daughter, no child has had a dummy for life, she will move on eventually, its not really worth the stress of taking it away too early

  • Yes my son wouldnt give his dummy up as it was his comfort thing.
We eventually got it off him when he was 3.
We had the dummy fairy come and give him $5 (big boy money)
    and she took it
We thought we would be up for a fight that night but he was excited to go to the shops with his big boy money and spend it the next day

  • just keep trying dont go backwards

  • I’m yet to take the dummy off my now 2 year old, not looking forward to it.

  • I hope she is better now without her dummy. It took my kids a few months to cope without them. One even resorted to sucking their thumb.

  • I hope that you have found a solution

  • I would have given her dummy back to her for sleep time knot of she was that unsettled. That is what I have done with my 2 1/2 year old. So now I am among for 3 with sleep time without a dummy

  • Different things work for different people. Some find it easy to go cold turkey, while others have to get creative :)

  • I hope it ended up getting better for you! I tried the giving dummy to santa thing but it didn’t work for us and I gave them back. I ended up cutting the tip off bit by bit until there was nothing left and she’d just hold them in her hands. Then I started throwing them in the bin one by one. Thats what worked for us :)

  • With so many useful tips I hope things worked out well in the end

  • That’s a nice idea exchanging with santa for presents
