Hello!

Just wondering what temp you keep your baby’s room at? Do you have a heater on over night?

We have the ducted air con on at night but we turn it off when we go to bed as it’s too expensive to run over night.
So my son’s room usually drops to around 16deg sometimes 14.

I’m concerned he’s not warm enough. His body feels warm but hands are freezing.

My son is seven-months-old and sleeps in a Bonds Wondersuit, socks and 2.5tog sleep suit.

Should I get a portable heater to have on over night? If so any recommendations please?

  • We have the overnight heating set to 18 degrees, and he has a 2.5 tog sleeping bag. Warm enough to stop him getting sick, but I can live with the energy bills.

  • We keep it at 23 when we can as that was the temp we were told is perfect for bub. Though sometimes this can dry the skin so just be careful!

  • I didnt like the heater- it made my baby’s skin too dry

  • I use split system on 21 all night and keep baby in singlet, onesie and sleep sack 1.0 tog. And a blankie.

  • I had a portable heater in my kids rooms when they were babies. I’d set it to about 21 degrees. It had a safety switch where if it fell, it automatically turned off. If you do get one, don’t place it near any curtains and not where Bub can reach. A heater can also dry out the air so I used to have a humidifier going too.

  • Personally I wouldn’t recommend leaving any heater on at night, as there is always a risk of fire – no matter how new an appliance is.

  • I use an oil heater in our room.
I’m the same as you. We have ducted heating but don’t keep it on over night and our temp drops to 14 overnight.
We just pop the oil heater on low and the room stays a comfortable 18 to 19 degrees.

  • Your baby can’t put into words how they feel, so it’s up to you as a parent to find the right room temperature for them. You don’t want your baby’s room to be either too hot or too cold. It’s recommended that the best temperature for babies is between 20 to 22 degrees Celsius. Personally I aimed for a bit lower during the night, but I think between 14-16C is too cold

  • I think recommendations are 20-22 degrees.

  • In the peak of winter and when my baby was really moving and often throwing off covers we had an oil heater in the room. Just enough to keep this chill from the room but not really heating it.

  • In the middle of the winter I used to do a portable heater in the corner of the room on low and aimed for a temperature of 18C

  • If Bub is not waking up likely he is not cold. I always have the heater on for an hour before bed time. (Get the room to 21-22 degrees) then tends to drop overnight and when i wake tends to be 17 degrees.
if you are worried maybe try an extra layer

  • The best thing to do is go off the body temperature rather than hands or feet as babies are notorious for having cold hands when they’re really okay.
