Hello!

I have been trying to grow my own herbs for a while now and bugs just keep eating them. I have tried putting netting over them and they still get in. What home remedies do you have that could stop these pesky insects eating my herbs. I heard garlic is good so I planted some garlic but it isn’t helping. Any tips you can share would be greatly appreciated.

  • My father used to have a fabulous vegetable garden. He used companion plants. eg you can plant Marigolds (also known as Stinking Rogers). Apparently bugs don’t like the scent of them. Worth a go. They will look nice in the garden too. Good luck and happy eating your herbs. 🙂

  • A local nursery in your area should also be able to assist with finding products or ideas for dealing with bugs and pests in the garden. I often go to our local nursery to look around at the newest plants and to also get ideas from the team at the nursery; always helpful.

  • Companion planting can often work well in gardens to keep insects and other pests from nibbling on plants. It is often a good idea to invest some gardening books about companion planting. Broken eggshells on the ground around plants can also be put to go use for keeping slugs and other pests that slither away from plants.

  • I have been using Neem oil lately (I bought it at Bunnings). You just take one or two teaspoon of pure Neem oil and mix it on one liter of water. I use an old / recycled spray bottle to apply it.
You can also plant certain plants to keep the bugs away from your vegetables, herbs and flowers: I have quite good experience with planting Marigold. Other options are onions, garlic, chives, lavender and mint

  • Rather than planting garlic nearby, make a spray bottle up with water and fresh chopped garlic and give your herbs a light spray. This will keep bugs away and be a natural mix you can wash off before eating. Try planting strong smelling plants like chives and rosemary nearby. If this doesn’t work, mulch and an eco spray from Bunnings.
