Hello!

Hi guys, my brother has aquired brain damange from a car accident that he had when he was 27, he is now 45. His short term memory is not great and I want to buy him something special for Christmas this year but I am stumped.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

  • I am quite flabbergasted by people who post on here asking for gift suggestions for friends and family. I have no idea about your brother, what he likes, his interests. It’s close to impossible for any of us to help you

  • Even though his short term memory isn’t so good, it is probably good to stimulate and train that part of the brain. Reading a book/ news paper, watching the news, playing a game are all very good activities. Activities to do with long term memory will give him a good feel because he recognises it, a photo album, watching his favorite game, visit old friends, visit your old house/family/birth place can all be lovely activities to bring back memories.

  • Hmm just wishing you all the best x

  • what is his personality? does he like comedy? carl barron is pretty good.

books? maybe get him an audio book so he doesn’t have to try to remember where he is up to.

you could be sneaky and ask him about what he likes or wants.

take him out to dinner or the movies.

also you could make up a box and make it themed so if it is movie night themed- you could put in dvds, popcorn, popcorn container, pyjamas.

make a hamper with his favourite chocolates or snacks

    good luck!

  • An album sounds like a great idea. For something different take him out for the day and just spend time with him doing something special. Take lots of photos and give them to him to remind him of the day you spent together.

  • I think some personally made vouchers suggesting a shared movie outing, a nice lunch or picnic outing or just a day spent doing things you like.

  • thankyou for the wonderful advise

  • I would go with some photos too. Maybe a nice collage photo frame, where you put pictures from the past of the two of you or the extended family.

  • Have you got photos from the past that you can put in an album, starting with you all as a family, his starting at newborn through to the latest you have, some of his places he visited as a child onwards through as far toward the current time as you can. I know this sounds wierd but if he was fond of dogs, maybe give him a toy or picture of one. Some with a brain injury like something as a security blanket. This often helps people – old and young who have memory loss. It may give him some comfort or jog some memories as long as it doesn’t agitate him. If he loves/d the garden, maybe a plant he may be able to take an interest in. I only hope somebody has suggestions which will help you.

  • I’m not really good at gifts for anyone, but once I read your story I thought about what I would do if that was my brother.

    A keep sake;
Video recording been edited by you with photos, his favourite song & then a family message at the end.

Not only is that a beautiful gift for a loved one but a piece of family history at his finger tips.
    I hope It helps x

    Bless bless
    Bonnie-Lee

  • A journal for the next year is nice, or a book of vouchers for him to use over the year, a movie date, a dinner date, movie night at home etc…… things to enjoy all year?

  • Do you do scrapbooking? Maybe an album of photos and written down memories of him would be lovely.

  • I am thinking of cooking my Christmas meat on the barbeque this year but I am not sure how to or for how long as I have never done it before,,, keep the heat outside this year instead of inside hey

  • My dad also has an aquired brain injury and we are always struggling to find gifts for him (especially as he is in a nursing home now and has limited space).

Hear are a couple of ideas off the top of my head:
    – a nice journal and a pen (could be as fancy or as simple as you like)
    – a lovely photo album filled with photos of people/places that he loves
    – maybe some kind of experience (if he is able) like a joy flight etc.

Good luck finding that perfect gift!
