Hello!

My mother has broken out in Psoriasis again. Dr says its stress related (which makes sense in her situation). It started in her hair and has now made its way down her body and mostly over her back from her shoulders to her the top of her bottom. She has been given cream that my father is applying to her every couple of hours but its not getting any better. Does anyone have any home remedies or old wives tale suggestions. She is so unhappy and it’s getting infected now because she can’t stop scratching. Any ideas would be welcome. Thanks

  • My granddaughter has this problem she uses cortisone cream at times but she also has had tests done and found bed mites can be the problem too, so she has special pillows and has her bed sprayed with eucalyptus and this seems to help. At times swimming causes it to come out on her chest and face so it’s a no win problem at times.

  • Your poor mum, I suffer from this, eczema and dermatitis. It sucks!

One thing I will say is to be careful with the steroid creme. Whilst they heal the skin, they don’t stop the cause and They thin the skin. So every time your mum scratches that spot again it wil tear open far quicker every time! Maybe a dermatologist, keep it as mousturised as possible. Frank body scrub (removes dead skin cells which if left on can keep the skin itchy! ) coconut oil, bio oil, don’t over dress/overheat. If she has a heat pump make sure that there is moisture in the air so it doesn’t dry out! Poor mumma

  • keep it all moisturized
    good luck

  • a good cortisone cream should help with the itching

  • Is the steroid cream helping at all? I think you should be applying moisturizer every couple of hours to make sure the areas aren’t drying out as well.

  • Check out Caroline’s Skin Care, it’s a Western Australia based Aussie company that specializes in making creams to treat Eczema, Dermatitis, Psoriasis, Dry Skin & Acne. Their creams are simply amazing, and they get results where many other more expensive cream don’t work. Go to carolineskincare.com.au

  • i have found keeping the areas affected moisturised helps alot. I use the steroid cream presribed by my doctor, but only when I have a flare up. Getting out in the sun makes a big difference also. UV light treatment is also an option. Hope this helps :)

  • Paw paw cream may help, I know there is also a steroid cream that can help accelerate healing, hopefully she gets some relief

  • there are some good comments here

  • How did it turn out?

  • My brother suffers badly from it and he finds going on a high alkaline diet helps – he just struggles to keep it up but if she can I would look into that and as raw as possible. I have also heard that eating Kefir everyday helps you’ll have to google it but basically you grow it and it is like yoghurt, you can make smoothies out of it etc but it helps your gut which is a link to most problems.
Another thing that my brother has tried is coconut oil, cold processed – just used like a moisturiser
also light therapy works really well but its basically like going in a sun bed and you need a dr referral I think it worked for my brother amazingly but he has a lot of freckles and was worried about getting skin cancer but I think done properly your fairly safe.
Hope these help and good luck to your mum I know how hard it can be

  • Your poor mum! I hope some of these suggestions have worked!

  • Oh poor thing, I have heard calendula cream can help or maybe a think zinc cream. I know your doctor can prescribe some pretty heavy duty steroid creams too. Good luck this weather would not be helping matters

  • Everyone is different so ive found so she might have to try a few things before she hits the thing that will work for her.
There are various companies with products that my help. you could google them… check out Botani, Lanolips, derma.
Nizoral shampoo is helpful…it comes in 2 strengths as far as i know…go straight for the strongest one with the Red label.

  • My son used to suffer chronic atopic ezcema. Fortunately now he only gets a little flare up every now and then. Some oats in a stocking in a lukewarm bath may help to calm down the skin. Colloidal oatmeal is wonderful for calming skin. Evening primrose oil is supposedly good for psoriasis. Caroline’s cream was great for my sons slight flare up a few months ago. I would ask your dr for a referral to a dermatologist. The other thing I would be tempted to do is go to a pharmacy and ask about a night time old generation anti histamine such as phenergan or something similar to help calm that itch. A lot of people with these conditions tend to itch very badly at night when they go to be and sometimes not be aware of it. My little son used to scratch I’m his sleep and you would find little blood spots on his sheets during the worst of his condition a few years back. The phenergan in most people causes sedation but may be helpful of a night, if the itch is keeping her awake etc, as lack of sleep can add to stress.

  • she needs to stop worrying about whatever it is that is stressing her out and get ontop of it, a good cortisone cream should be helping

  • *brand of topical ointment I meant to say*

  • Evening primrose oil capsules take internally and apply externally are brilliant. There is also a brand called Dr wheat grass which I swear by. http://www.drwheatgrass.com

  • I can vouch for the effectiveness of fish oil supplements – taken regularly I get enormous relief not to mention the other health benefits. Applying rose hip oil directly and as soon possible after bathing also helps a lot. Good luck!

  • My nephew suffers from this and is seeing a specialist. I will be giving the answers to him to try, thanks.
