Hello!

Hi MoM, can you ask your fans for a bit of advise. My 6 year old son is
still in pull-ups at night and wets through them very often. I’ve tried
limiting water, reward system, I got up for 2 months twice a night to wake
him for a wee (still hit and miss) but that just made him tired. I’m at my wits
end, will he just grow out of it or is there anything else you can suggest?
Thanks everyone

  • An OT and a continence care nurse.

  • Just give him time, don’t see it too much as a problem and approach it with a relaxed attitude

  • Most kids do grow out of it, though he seems a little old. Perhaps limit liquids for several hours before bed.

  • It’s very common for boys to develop a bit later in this. My son was regularly wet till he was 11years old or so. I never made a problem of it. We didn’t use pull ups. We reduced water too and picked him up and brought him to the toilet before we went to sleep in the night. When he was wet in the night I just cleaned the bed and put the sheets in the washing machine. My son is 14yrs now and there are no more problems.

  • Have you taken him to see a dr to ensure there is no medical reasons for it? It could be medical and it could be something he will grow out of it

  • My son wet at night until he turned 13yo. My father also until he was 11yo. You cannot stop it. It was never a big deal for me. Once he got too big for pull ups, we changed the sheets a coupla times a night. Lots of research I finally found out there is a part of the brain that matures later that cuts off the need to wee at night. Cannot remember the technical term… The most important thing is to not make a big deal of it, and get used to the smell of boy wee LOL xxx

  • In winter I would try to give him a drink after tea, and then an hour after that, and then no more drinks. As long as they drink enough during the day! And only water after 5pm, and no sugar after tea!
Toilet is the last thing before bed ( even after a book in bed) and then after a few nights, just take the nappy off?
Every kids different and you don’t want them to be anxious or stressed because that makes it harder too – and if you have autism or ADHD ? it’s totally different ball game anyway too.

  • Do a test run without them. I found with my 4 1/2 yo, with her night time nappies, I just stopped using them. She was fine, better than I thought, wet herself less of a night without a nappy than with.

  • I would he speaking to a Dr to see if there are underlying problems.

  • he will grow out of it, some kids just take longer than others

  • I think he will in time, hows he going now, any improvement?

  • Hope by now he is out of pull ups for you.

  • I’d suggest just time, but have a chat to your GP if you’re worried.

  • how is it going now?

  • How is he going now?

  • Your local child health nurse may be able to help with suggestions

  • How are they going now?

  • Good advice below – has anything helped?

  • I know it can take boys a little longer to stay dry throughout the night

  • It can take a long time in boys to be dry at night. Their hormones which regulate it can kick in really quite late. Yes, he will grow out of it, though who knows when.
