Hello!

My 21 month old has never slept through the night. Never. She still wakes up 2-3 times a night wanting a bottle. She goes to bed at about 7.30 and is up for the day between 6.30-7pm.
She’s happy as Larry during the day. I’m just at a loss of what to do.

  • Can you reduce the quantity of milk to slowly wean her off the bottles? I kept telling our Daughter that she was a big girl so didn’t need as much milk for in the night. She eventually dropped the need to have the bottles but it did take a while

  • Some kids just take so long to get into a routine. Seems like you’ve got a couple of suggestions here to try

  • My 19 month old is still waking up once a night for a bottle. The MCH nurse told me yesterday that I have to stop with the bottles. Which I tried earlier this year but found my daughter just wasn’t going back to sleep for hours. So I guess I will have to try again by gradually reducing the amount in her bottle. Hopefully we can all get a full nights sleep soon. Good luck!

  • With my order was easy-the day i stopped breastfeeding he started to sleep whole nights..with my younger unfortunately didnt work…

  • Hi there,
I would suggest not giving her the bottle over night at all.
So not after 8pm max. Make sure shes had a nice big dinner. And not another bottle until 7amish. She is not a newborn baby anymore, time for you both to get a full nights sleep!
Fully commit, start asap and just go through with it. It’s what they know. The first few nights you will need to go in, but not with a bottle, keep the lights off, dont make eye contact “shhhh”..scoop up for a long hug if distressed still not making eye contact, then lovingly and not angry or tense
“its okay, no more, its bed time” then lay them down, “goodnight sweetheart” and walk away, even if she stands straight back up, and is carrying on. Head straight out without looking back at them.

If its just a tired whinge, listen to her it might lessen and she will fall asleep even.
If its frantic, wait at least 1 minute, time yourself. And redo what you’ve done as said before. It’s in your best interest you don’t get broken sleep.
Good luck, super nanny had some great episodes on this. I sympathise with you. It won’t be forever, just give it a good go first before you give in.

  • That is so hard. I feel for you mumma! I’ve been to sleep school and one of the things they suggest is babies/toddlers don’t “need” a bottle overnight. I know its super tough, but I know my little one, as soon as she realised I wasn’t going to feed her overnight she started to sleep through. it did take 3 – 4 weeks to break that habit. I wish you all the luck in the world.
