Hello!

I would like to stop breastfeeding my bub. What’s the best way to go about it?

  • There are different methods
You might find this a helpful read

  • Also if you feed from both sides, reduce it to one side. Slowly reduce the feeds quantity and volume so you don’t get any blockages/mastitis etc

  • I followed a guide in the book save our sleep by tizzie hall and some advice a friend received from tresillian. Feed times were set, then I moved baby to food then breast and eventually replaced some breast feeds with cows milk (12mths plus). I then started to knock out some feeds with the last to go being the night feed, which I replaced with a warm sippy cup of milk

  • i reckon wean them off the breast, dont just take it away. for my first child i would start her on the breast and when she was comfortable i would discreetly swap the breast for a bottle

  • You could try the don’t offer, don’t refuse method.

  • I have just finished breastfeeding my almost 13 month old this last week. I had changed her daytime breastfeeds to bottles at about 10 months and at 11 months I stopped breastfeeding her in the morning. At this point she was still having a bedtime breastfeed and a feed through the night when she woke which I knew at this point was just a comfort thing. My hubby started holidays last week and we had discussed earlier that as soon as he started holidays that he would put her to bed with a bottle and then get up to her through the night and settle her in her cot without any milk. The first night she woke once, and while it took hubby an hour and a half to get her to sleep, she has slept through the night every night since. She has only once tried to grab my singlet for boob, about 4 days in, but has otherwise been so much easier than I ever thought it was going to be given she was a comfort sucker. I think what worked so well for us is that we had discussed a weaning date, we stuck to it, and I didn’t give in to her. I nearly did the say she was grabbing my singlet, but I knew if I’d have given in that it would have been a long, drawn out process. Good luck!

  • I breastfed for nearly 16 months, by that stage it was definitely just a comfort thing for my daughter. I used distractions mainly to cut back to just a before bed feed and then together we chose a special ‘bedtime bottle’ to have instead of night time feeds! I assume that it wasn’t too challenging for us to transition because she was that bit older. Good luck!!

  • Am in the process of doing the same thing. My son is 13 months old and I have just cut down to morning and night feeds. I have been doing that for a couple of weeks and as of 2 morrow I will be dropping the morning feed and then continuing from there. Seems to be working….my proid came back today!

  • I stopped breastfeeding when my daughter was 1 year and 1 week old. The pediatrician told me that from 11 months they are actually ready to stop. I lingered a little longer and then I followed the advice the pediatrician gave me. When you stop, stop completely. Don’t go back otherwise it will become a nightmare. At that time my daughter was breastfeeding just in the evening before going to bed. More emotional bond I guess. The first two nights I let my husband bring her to bed. He played with her, read her a story. She went to bed peacefully. The third night was the big try. I brought her to bed. Would she have searched for the breast? She didn’t. I left her happy and she fell asleep.
    Success with your child!!
