Hello!

My daughter has long and blond hair, very fine. She constantly struggles with tangled hair. One hair-dresser once told me that she shouldn’t use conditioner, because that makes things worse. What do you think? Combing her hair is such a big problem every day. We use one detangler, a cheap one from the supermarket, but it doesn’t seem to help much. Do you have any idea about how to solve this problem? Maybe do you know the name of a detangler that helped you?
Thanks in advance! :-)

  • I’ve always been told conditioner is best to detangle hair – I would even so far as to say try to brush the hair with the conditioner still in it while she is in the bath and then brush again after the bath when it’s all washed out

  • There are products like hair oil that you could use to detangle.

  • I don’t understand why your hairdresser would recommend not using conditioner. It certainly helps to detangle hair.

  • You have been very kind VernaB!! In a situation of need, you found a very good solution with the coconut oil!! Well done!!

  • I hope it helps! I was rather skeptical about trying it but eventually gave it and has been well worth it. We were away on holidays when I finally tryed it, and mostly because we had run out of shampoo so I didn\’t really have a choice.
I hope this helps your daughter!

  • What a special advise you gave. I love coconut oil and I’ve never thought about using it in place of the shampoo. It’s a much more natural way to clean too. I am not completely sure my daughter will be willing to try, but I will surely tell her. Thank you! So nice that you are regularly swimming in the ocean. Well done!! :-)

  • I use conditioner (most brands seem fine but personally I use Tresemme) and about once a week I put coconut oil through wet hair and leave for about 30 minutes before rinsing out. Also comb the hair before rinsing. I have found using cold water for rinsing hair seems to wash it out better. Also be prepared if your daughter stops using shampoo it will seem to go quite oily/greasy , keep at it as after a few weeks the hair will become smoother. I swim in the ocean mostly everyday and my hair gets really tangly and also sandy! So I have found this really helps keep it untangled and being a busy mum doesn\’t take too much time to manage.

  • And what do you use, instead of the shampoo, to clean your hair?

  • I have similar hair and found that not using shampoo works great at keeping knots and tangles out.

  • It surely helps! :-) Thank you!

  • yes I wash my own hair in bath, always lean backwards to get shampoo than conditioner off, smooth it backwards and get some moistur out. Always dry by pulling towel smoothlyover my hair (do not rub!)then wide brush I use to keep it in the shape , any other things you want to do when dry is up to you. Hope this helps do not like tangles either it is true

  • Thanks to you too. Very important to brush from the bottom up!

  • my sister had this issue when she was a child. we put hair in a plait at night with conditioner mixed with water sprayed through. when brushing we always started at the bottom and worked our way up. Brush hair several times a day to keep on top of the knots somewhat

  • Like mom56312 my daughter also washes her hair no more than twice a week. The repair oil looks very good indeed. I love Pantene products!
Let’s hope that all our daughters will soon not suffer anymore of tangled hair!! :-)

  • I agree with a great brush. Sometimes I noticed I would brush my daughters hair but the bristles wouldn’t go right through to underneath her hair so those bits would end up matted. Sounds like there are some other wonderful ideas on here to try as well!

  • My youngest has the same problem, and she ends up with dreadlocks overnight and brushing is the worst thing in the world! It’s awful! No detangling sprays or conditioners have worked for her, but a detangling brush I recently bought actually does the job easily! It’s a Lady Jayne on-the-go detangling hairbrush.

  • my daughters hair is the same, a few weeks ago I purchased some Pantene Intensive Damage Repair oil, Leave on treatment. 30ml. to use it in my hair. As it worked so well i decided to try t in her hair, I have only used it my daughters hair a few times now and she no longer has a hair full of knots every day and brushing is no longer a battle. I also only wash my daughters hair once or twice a week now. If nothing else seems o work give it a go. ( her hair isnt oilly as a result as you only need to use a tiny bit one or two pumps per use. )

  • Oh, Cherz! That’s so kind of you!! I really love all your answers and I will make good use of it.
This year Aldi will finally arrive here in WA too. I can’t wait! i’m so curious about those hair wraps!!
    Thank you!!

  • After shampooing your hair apply warm oil to the roots of your follicles, and then wrap your head in a hot towel. Argan oil is the usual go-to for deep oil conditioning treatments, however, you can also use macadamia oil or even coconut oil for a natural shine.
Warm oils help to repair hair cuticles without affecting the moisture of the strands. This also helps with preventing damage and tangles to your hair.
Hair Wraps are also a great invention Aldi have them in their currant catalogue for $8.99 and Avon brochure 06 has Hair Wraps and Tangle Tamer for $4.99 EACH after a purchase from pages 120-125 or $12.99 without and there is also go old Big W or chemist-warehouse.
Love all the moms help as well ..so hope you find success.:-)

  • The coconut oil is such a wonderful product. I’m going to try that too.
    Thanks to you all!!
