Hello!

I’m old school, I break the news of a new arrival over the phone- not via social media, but one on one starting with the immediate family first, before I post anything online.

I shared the news of my daughter’s birth with my favourite auntie- she stayed awake during the entire birth!

She let her son know, privately, still giving me the opportunity to make a ‘public’ announcement… but then his wife immediately made a public announcement on social media as though she had just given birth and going as far as tagging me in her post!

Would this upset you? Or is it just the way things are done now?

  • NO ONE shoudl be posting on social media until the new Mum or Dad make an announcement post. Anyone that does should be last on the list for any further family news.

  • I would be extremely upset. I would have made it known that noone is to announce your special news before you. It’s very wrong x

  • I would be extremely upset by this.
We asked our family and friends not to post anything until we said it was ok, because we just wanted to stay in our little bubble for as long as we could.
Except for us our families made the calls to everyone else to break our news (gender, name, weight, height, time, and the birth story) which unfortunately some people took as an invitation to come to the hospital. So unfortunately for me, I had to share my first baby (who took 18 months to conceive) with 12 other people, not including my partner.
So I kinda get how you feel, its the wrong thing to do and I hope she got called out on it.

  • A relative of mine put his baby’s birth on facebook. He forgot I didn’t have facebook. I found out a few days later when asked if they could call in a few days later. I made my feelings known as could easily have “bumped” into a friend of theirs and found out from the friend. That would have been even worse.

  • oh my goodness. this is so not ok. I am totally old school too. To the point we didn’t even announce on facebook we were pregnant, let alone a birth notice. So yes, totally shattered if someone did that to me. I would ask her to take it down, that it isn’t her news to share. If she doesn’t, report the post.

  • Definitely not appropriate, I’d be phoning the son immediately and asking him to remove the announcement. Politely tell him it is not his news to share then do your own announcement

  • People should give you time to share your news first. I’d ask her nicely to remove her post and to not do this again in the future.

  • I may have laid some ground rules first, but it may have been an honest mistake on her behalf. Maybe she thought you had already told everyone.

  • I would be so incredibly angry. Then again, I would tell all those that needed to know in one hit. No chance of leaks then

  • Sorry but that is not on it’s not her place to do that and I would be telling her so as it is your news.

  • I’d be furious! We received so much pressure from my mum in particular to announce the birth quickly as she wanted to brag about it on her social media. So stressful for us.

  • I would be absolutely livid about it. She had no right and I’d tell her so in no uncertain terms. You have every right to feel the way you do.

  • I wouldn’t be happy at all either, not on !

  • My mother-in-law found out I was pregnant, and my husband asked her to keep quiet about it until I had gotten a chance to tell my mother. Unfortunately, our mums crossed paths before I had got to tell my mum. Mother-in- law decided to “let the cat out of the bag” in public which upset my mother, it has caused fued that has lasted 20 years

  • I would be so angry! It’s a very personal thing and she’s not even blood!

  • This would upset me very much. People need to learn and understand personal news to share belongs to the person first. I would be ropable.

  • I would be furious!!!! How dare she!

  • She received the news from her Hubby through a aunt, so It already was out there. Unless she was told personally not to share, don’t be too hard on her. In a year or so will it really matter. People like to share news , thats how it is theses days. Enjoy your Bubba.

  • I would not be happy with this. It is totally your news to share with everyone.

  • I would be upset but unfortunately I don’t think everything thinks before they post.
