I was googling the most human way to get rid of cane toads and it said “The most humane way to kill juvenile and adult cane toads is to catch them and put them into a secure container with air holes (plastic takeaway food containers are ideal). Put the container in a refrigerator overnight which causes the toad to go into a coma-like state”….doesn’t sound humane to me though !

I’m distrurbed at some people’s responses re hunting and bashing them, yes they are a pest but some of them are the size of basketballs – you want that gunk splattering all over you? Plus is it appropriate to have children killing them like that? I’d sugguest wear gloves, put them in something sealed and put it in your freezer. Otherwise ask the local vet, rspca or animal park/zoo and of course make sure they are cane toads and not native ones although I think the native ones are usually pretty unlike the poor old cane

We don’t have them in South Australia, as far as I know. But I’d run a mile from one, if I saw one, because I hate toads and frogs. Perhaps you may need to make your cat an “indoor only” cat. Or you could contact your local council for advice.

Ooh I hate cane toads! Lucky they haven’t come to NSW yet! But I’ve heard they can be very deadly to pets so be careful!

salt on their back, or a hit with a shovel, or put into a plastic bag or freeze them are all used but freezing would be more humane however I would not put them in a domestic freezer for health reasons. Men prefer hitting them with a shovel, women and kids find the salt method easier as they are too hard to catch. Better this then have them poison and kill your pet dog, cat or chooks by spitting at them or swimming in their drinking water.

Check with the neighbours and local council. The neighbours might not have humane ideas but the council should. Also maybe as your local RSPCA.

how did it go

As kids we used to go ‘toad hunting’ with our bats and sticks. Let the kids have some fun? lol. There’s not too much you can do unfortunately, newbies will always jump into your yard.

My husband said he would never dream of putting them in the freezer where food is even if its in a bag certainly wouldn’t handle them they are so gross…

Thankgoodness I dont liive in an area with this problem as their is no way I would be putting them in the freezer with food hopefully you may find a more hygenic solution

Freezing them is the humane way, but I really don’t fancy picking one up in a plastic bag, (shudder), and then putting it in my freezer (gross!) I don’t know of any other way though.
