Hello!

Any other mums out there with young ones who are prematurely going grey but struggling to afford regular hairdresser visits due to time and money? I want to know which hair colour is best to hide greys and won’t cost me a fortune to maintain.

  • What is your natural hair colour ? Have you considered to just go grey ? It can be so pretty and has a distinct look !

  • If you decide to go with dye always make sure of patch testing to be safe.

  • I have been using the Nice n Easy home hair dyes for years and find them easy to apply, they cover greys, and last up to three months depending on how often you wash your hair and what kind of hair products you use. Try not to use scalp scrubs as they tend to strip hair of hair dye quicker. You can purchase these home hair dyes from the supermarket usually for under $10 per pack, or even cheaper if you buy in bulk from online suppliers.

  • I just dye mine blue black as that is the closest to my hair colour. It is easier to see the greys but it would be a lot of work for me if I were to dye it blonde or a lighter shade as then I would have to use bleach as well.
I just buy supermarket packet dye. Woolies usually has then for half price each week (I don’t care what brand, just the cheapest one does the trick)!

  • If you can do it yourself it is much cheaper than going to a hairdresser every 6 weeks. The supermarket ones are very reasonably priced.

  • A lighter colour that isn’t too far from your natural colour would be best to hide them

  • It really does depend a lot on your shade… most of the supermarket colors work pretty effectively.

  • I colour my hair at home. Its a lot cheaper. I actually buy the mens beard dyes and use an old toothbrush to do root touch ups between colours. I get quite a few uses out of one packet that way and its so fast and and easy and cheaper still…. ;)

  • I’ve used a clairol touch up I get from chemist warehouse. I think it was about $10 but with price hikes lately not sure. If I remember rightly it did come in a few colours and lasts a few weeks.

  • I never go to the hairdressers either. I cut and color my hair myself and buy it by the super market

  • I have been grey since my early 20s and ended up embracing it and just get a cut and style that suits me. I love the grey and get so many sincere comments about how good my hair looks.

  • I think matching your natural hair colour could be more manageable as you may not see regrowth as easily, and should be able to give the greys a bit of a touch up. There are plenty of brands to choose from to do it at home yourself. Keep in mind if you have thick and or long hair you may need more than 1 packet. Keep an eye out for specials and go from there.

  • Yes there are some good brands of hair colour out there I usually buy mine from the Supermarket and do it myself there is one brand that is a mousse type which is really good

  • Currently I am ignoring it as I am allergic too many things but need to look into it. Also have curly hair and need something curly friendly. Will be following along for the answers though.

  • I’m 27 and find strands of greys :( I honestly just use a brown box hair dye from the supermarket.
Can’t afford and definitely don’t have the time to be going to the hair dresser often.

I think blonde highlights would probably help hide the greys but Who has time to keep up with that!
