I used to sit down with my kids, day after day, hour after hour and read to them. They loved the one on one time and also learnt to read. It’s such an impersonal way to communicate on apps and devices. Best thing you can give your child is your time

we have a Leappad that has interactive stories on it and you can purchase more for it. my daughter loves it – has a few popular character ones as well.

She didn’t like the interactive books, won’t sit and listen to me read a book but likes the Octopus’s Garden with the Ringo Star CD. Now looking for books with music!

We have a lot of traditional books like Dr Seuss’s Green Eggs & ham & 1 fish 2 fish but we use both the ipad and the ‘real book’ it just adds an extra dimension, The little red hen has a beautiful interactive app, its in the golden book range so all the imagery is the same which our kids love! The range of spot books are also lovely on the iPad. I agree nothing beats reading to your children but if they want to read on the iPad instead of just watching clips or movies I think its a great idea, a lot of book apps have activities spotted throughout too!

I know they aren’t books but you can also download free flash card apps. I’ve even got one in Italian.

Rather than Ebooks, try pop up books, and books that have sliding panels that reveal creatures etc. I found she could curl up on her seat and play with these for hours, and it has already started to instil in her a love of books.

As a teacher, it is more important for you to read to your child- children learn so much more when a loving adult or older child is there with them than they ever can alone with technology. At this stage, it is best for her to hear the rhythm of reading and make the personal decision that reading is enjoyable than it is to recognise letters/words.

I also vote for the local library. Ours has heaps available on the website, I’m not even sure that you need to be a member.

My 2 year old daughter loves to read. She definitely prefers real books (before every nap/sleep we read her a book or two & she then reads it to herself before falling asleep) but she also loves using the iPad. I love the Fisher Price apps that she can read along with & touch.
