Hello!

“My dd 3 & 1/2 yrs has been throwing up for the past 7 days. She will happily eat breakfast, snacks and then lunch, then she will throw a tantrum before going to bed for a nap. She will then wake saying she “wants to throw up” she will then proceed to throw up a couple of times and will refuse to eat dinner. When we stop her going to the toilet or bathroom to throw up, and say throw up here on the floor if you have to, she doesn’t throw up. We took her to the doctor and he has checked her and said it’s fine . She does have a bit of a sore throat and her brother has a cough and cold. And has had a couple of coughing fits that have caused him to throw up but no gastro bug.
Her bowel and water movements are fine.
I have tried removing the nap but then she wakes after falling asleep and wants to throw up then. I think it may be all in her mind however I am not sure. Her diet hasn’t changed recently.” Can you offer any answers?

  • I don’t like being alarmist but could she have nocturnal seizures, either during sleep or as she is waking up. Keep an eye on her and make sure she isn’t sticking her finger down her throat. Vomitting will make her throat sore. Does she drink much milk or have other dairy products. She may be lactose intolerant. A cousin of mine used to have stomach and vomit sometimes. She is getting better as she gets older but still has to restrict the amount she has. You can buy a lot of Lactose Free Products – yoghurt, cheese, milk, icecream, custard and cream. Liddells brand tastes just ordinary milk products. I am not a chocolate lover but their chocolate custard is delightful.

  • What a tripper! Only thing I can suggest, and will only work if it’s all in her head, is create a distraction at vomit times

  • Were you able to resolve this? Seems a bit strange but if the dr said there’s nothing medical – maybe go back for another opinion

  • I would be getting down to the fact is she actually throwing up. Hmmm

  • Have you investigated her sugar levels / diabetes? My husband use to have a similar issue when he was younger – not quite diabetes but still low sugar issues.

  • she could have an intolerance to something as they can develop at any time so I would talk to a doctor about it. other than that there may be some anxiety around her going to sleep and waking up again that makes her feel unwell. Again this is something you should speak to the gp about.

  • Did you find an answer to your daughter’s problem?

  • I would be wondering if its some sort of indigestion or reflux?

  • maybe she is getting dizzy, is there anything near her room that could be causing her to get dizzy or feel sick maybe

  • Sometimes a sore throat in a child with present with a sore stomach and can make them vomit. My younger brother was always throwing up when sick with a cold.

  • Keep a diary of events and monitor he closely, kids do get some strange ideas but there may be something going on, a great family doctor is a great asset!

  • How is she going now? I hope it has been sorted. There’s nothing worse than having an un well child.

  • Hope some advice below has helped

  • how is she going now?

  • I’d be inclined to seek a second opinion as that does sound like strange behaviour

  • Hope she is ok now.

  • How is she going now?

  • Was she telling the truth or was it in her mind?

  • See a Doctor, there could be something going on inside her body that she doesn’t have any control over.

  • I agree a second opinion wouldn’t hurt
