Hello!

I’m trying to keep orchids going after they have flowered. What do I do so they will flower again next season? And how often do they flower?

  • Avoid over watering as this can lead to root rot. Position your orchid in a bright windowsill facing east or west. Weekly feeding with a fertilizer designed for orchids. Repotting in fresh orchid mix when your orchid stops blooming.

  • I;m not usually any good with Orchids however I have had 2 now for 2 years and they sit on my kitchen windowsill (morning sun) and they just keep flowering. I only water once a week.

  • I spoke to a horticulturist, as I had the same issue, apparently orchids from the supermarket purchased for a decorative flower are not designed to re flower- very frustrating

  • my understanding is that you need a good feeding schedule for orchids and you can buy specific orchid food for them

  • they need to be feed regularly

  • Depends on the type of orchid you have. I have the butterfly orchid (4 in different Colours) and they seem to flower about every 10 months or so. I water mine every two weeks with warm water, have them in a sunny spot in a warm room and every second water add a tiny (1/4 teasp in one litre water) orchid fertiliser. Also don’t repot very often as it takes them ages to reflower once the roots are disturbed.

  • We have had orchids for over 30 years & they are the easiest plants to keep & require very little maintenance. Ours flower every year & all we do is separate them when they get too overcrowded i n their pots & make new plants out of them. After they have been separated they may not flower that year but always recover. We keep ours in a semi shaded area which gets some light but not direct hot afternoon sun

  • My Mum used to have orchids and she didnt really do much to be honest and hers always flowered.
I know there are some types that are not yearly flowering though so i think it depends on what type of orchid you have.

  • I have been told they like to be ignored..a tight fit in their pot apparently they like.

  • there are some good comments here

  • I use orchid potting mixture & orchid food for my orchids.

  • Go to your local library and find some books on how to manage orchids, it might help and you might find some interesting ideas from reading

  • I was told to ignore them completely. They are best left alone

  • Some orchids only flower every two years, so maybe check which you have also I have been told that if they are not flowering put them in a dry corner in the garden and ignore them and this will revive them, have just tried this waiting to see what happens!

  • I am interested in these answers too!

  • We use orchid food ours flower 1 time every year usually around september/october.

  • Orchids need a lot of care, finding the right place for them is essential, not to hot or too dry..or too moist or too cold! a liquid fertilize is best and make sure its specific to the type of orchid you have. Go to your local independently owned nursery (not bunnings or masters) and ask someone there.

  • There is special orchid feed/fertiliser you can buy

  • Orchids need lots of water in a shaded area. You need to have them growing in an orchid mix which you can buy from nurseries and bunnings etc dont let them dry out too much. They need feeding at least once a year whith a mix like osmocote.. they only flower once a year and if not looked after properly you may miss a year.

  • I would do a google search and find all of your answers there, Orchids are very hardy once flowered though
