Hello!

“I have a very fussy 7 year old. He is more interested in playing than eating and I am struggling to find healthy snacks for his lunch box. He will have a bite or two of an apple or pear and will not touch other fruit. I like to make things at home for him, but he never eats them. He says he only likes things with chocolate. To make things harder he has egg and nut allergies. He is eating less and less at school and I’m worried that he’ll start falling behind because of his lack of energy in the class room. I’d love some advice and some great recipes that might help in getting some nutritious food into my boy!” Do you have any lunchbox ideas?

  • Maybe cut the fruits up? Yogurt pouches crackers and dip or cheese are good. My boys love wraps or sushi in their lunch boxes.

  • Good luck with that! I struggled 20 odd years ago, now there’d all the lunchbox dos and donts, it’s way tougher

  • I would start by filling his lunch box with foods you know he likes and each day add something a little different.

  • I found yumbox – bento style lunch box and food pick help my fussy ester. Sandwiches in shapes, such as dinosaurs are eaten a lot more than boring squares.

  • We pack a salad of cucumber, carrot, cherry tomato, snow peas.
    A can of tuna.
    1 apple or banana.
2 biscuits or a piece of banana bread.

  • Interesting reading the comments given to this!

  • maybe make some really healthy oat biscuits and then drizzle a little bit of chocolate over the top of them.

  • go to one handed cook website! awesome ideas in there

  • there are some good comments here

  • Kathryn had some really good suggestions. You could also try dipping some dried fruit in chocolate. You used to get yogurt covered sultanas and berries that could help kick him back into eating again.

  • Have you found anything he really likes?

  • Weetbix slice is a sneaky one because it seems like it is chocolate. My brother loved cruskits instead of sandwiches. Maybe something like an apricot ball or slice (or other fruity slice so it seems like a treat even though it is healthy). Maybe a crumble with fruit and oats or some yogurt might be good.

  • How did you go with some of these ideas?

  • Just keep trying different things and eventually you will know what they like… Trial and error

  • Some wonderful suggestion here from the MoM community. I hope you found some inspiration.

  • Some really helpful suggestions below.

  • Crispy Zucchini fried, avocado, rice and some fruits. Prepare like bento style. Kids would love to eat them.

  • There are some really easy muesli bar slice recipes, I just get mine from searching on the internet and make them regularly-I guess you could drizzle chocolate on them too.

  • Blend 15 medjool dates, half cup sultanas with 2 tablespoonful raw cacao powder or MILO if you are not into raw cacao like me ;P, 2 tbspoon tahini paste and some spirulina powder/vital greens. thet taste and looks like chocolate. full of vitamins and protein…great energy boost too.

  • Maybe a zucchini slice or quiche, or homemade party sausage rolls- you can grate carrots, zucchini etc into the mince to hide veggies
